My
first flight simulator was a console unit that was given to
me in the mid to late 1970's. It was a beige box with toggle
switches and a built in steel joystick. It only came with
a slip of paper that gave the names of the gauges that were
displayed on the screen and only the dashboard of the aircraft
was displayed. The unit was designed to teach pilots to navigate
and land IFR.
I had no idea what the gauges did,
except the altimeter and air speed indicator, so I had to
go to the library and find appropriate material. It took me
months to finally be able to land that thing. During all that
research something changed in me and I became obsessed with
flight simulation.
The first sim that truly hooked me,
and is still my favorite because of the immersion, was Their
Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain. I spent endless hours
on that title. I also spent an untold fortune on PC's trying
to get the max performance out of it.
My favorite aircraft is the Messerschmitt
Bf-109F-4. The brazen yellow nose, square canopy, shark like
paint schemes, and cannon equipped Bf-109 grabbed me from
the very first time I saw it. No other plane could ever take
its place in my heart.
It is my goal to see that all
the people out there, hunched over keyboards at zero dark
thirty, trying to get that one last pixel right, adding one
more minuscule bit of immersion, researching more historical
realism, or putting any effort in that benefits our niche,
get the recognition they deserve. It is a privilege to be
in the position I'm in and to be part of this great community.
