Lock On: Modern Air Combat Page 6

Second Missile Away Tail End Charlie is my next target. I slew the pointing cross to the right. Another push on the acquisition button, check the TVM for a good lock…and crosscheck the pipper lock on cross…and then I shoot again.
Break Right! Then I break right. From the missile view, you can see my wingie and me in the right turn.
Howdy, Pardner! Let’s stick with missile #1 for a moment. I want to see this puppy home in on Mr. Gundish. The missile hits its apex and noses down into its final attack dive. It doesn’t take long before Mr. Gundish is disassembled.
Splash Two! A few seconds later, missile #2 impacts the last vehicle.
Boom! I break off to the east and then circle back north. I want to knock off the lead tanks and hopefully bottle them up a bit. Once again, I shoot two in one attack.
Sweeten The Shot Durn…I’m out of Mavericks. Guess I’m going to have to use the gun. I circle back around to get a pass where I shoot the tank from behind…his weakest armor area. As I bore in, my aim is initially a tad off to the left…I see a few hits, but don’t think it’s enough. So I keep my pipper on and drive in a little closer.
Pull Up! As I fire, I’m close enough to check out the centerfold in the Playboyski that the tank driver is reading. I lay on the g as I pull up over the exploding tank.
Next Pass 1 Whoa momma! That be close! Better draw the fangs in a little.
Next Pass 2 Here’s my second gun pass.
Gun Happy 1! I’m feeling so good about how the day is going….
Gun Happy 2! ….that I make another pass before handing the attack over to my wingie.
Wingie Kill 2 As I pull off that last pass, I clear number two in hot. I bend my jet back around and see that he’s already in his dive. He shoots once and then twice.
Short Final There’s not much left to kill, so we’re up and outa there. We climb to altitude, safe our switches, and take a much-needed drink from our water bottles. It’s about a 20-minute drive home…and since we have a little extra gas, I decide to give my wingie a little practice as lead. I want him to lead us in for a formation landing…so I tell him to take the lead. He sets us up on a nicely extended final, configures early to let me settle in and then flys us right on to the deck.
Tucked In Tight Here we are right at touchdown…from my wingie’s cockpit to me.
Touchdown Squeak! Nice approach…but I gotta talk to him about lining up on his half of the runway (and not the centerline)…I don’t like feeling like I’m going to land in the dirt!
