I took a deep breath to steady my nerves, and pulled my binoculars out, watching to see if the pilot ejected cleanly. We had reconnaissance forces in the area, if he ejected in the right side of the river our forces would pick him up. I could see the parachute; he was on the right side of the river after all! Time to extract revenge.
“Viper 712. Vasily, have you rockets left?”
A brief pause, while Vasily checked. “Da. Want me to make another run?”
I was worried about his aircraft. “After that proximity missile explosion, how is the damaged engine?”
“It isn’t.” He was definite. “Things settled down after I leveled off. I can make the run.”
“Da. Weapons free.”
“Two, in hot.”
Vasily looked out his canopy, following the plume of smoke evaporating in the calm air. Thank goodness for the lack of wind, as Kolya predicted!
He rolled in, sighting in on this target. “Rockets away! That’s it for me, I’m Winchester!”
It was all we needed; Vasily’s aim was true.
“Vasily! Well done! Form up for home!”
