We extracted together, as we came in. On the way, Cobra 411 called in, to advise us that his teammate had been picked up by our ground forces! So, a successful mission all around.
Our war with the Georgians only lasted a few short days. But I find myself surprised by things I have seen in the world press. I feel torn; I know that we did the right thing to protect our peacekeepers in Ossetia, and to defend our Abkhaz allies who stood with us against the IRLF those years ago. But America stood with us in those days as well, and now I find myself ranged against them, at least as this issue goes. As they did in 2004, the Georgians fought like lions, with their guns and missiles. Their soldiers also feel that they fight for a just cause. This was not like fighting the Sheikh; there, all of the IRLF were evil men. Here, Saakashvili alone bears the blame; it is he who insists on driving a wedge between America and us; he who invaded Ossetia, he who set his soldiers against us here in Abkhazia. As for those in uniform, well, on each end of the rifle, we are the same. I grieve for those who died by my hand in this fight, and I pray we will not see another such conflict soon.
