Some of the graphic effects surprised us, and not to the good. The dreaded “sparkle effect” on missile motors from earlier versions of F4 have once again reared their ugly heads. Ouch.
The flare effects are nice but F4 veterans will miss some of the more advanced BMS smoke effects.
Beach comments, “One feature I did like that I can’t recall seeing in previous versions of F4 is the colored padlock box on targets. I’m using “enhanced” padlocking in a small concession to realism. Enemy targets padlock red while friendly targets padlock green. This may have been in F4 from the very beginning, but it is the first time I noticed it, perhaps someone can enlighten me.”
Missile smoke trails are fairly well done, persisting for a good amount of time.
Explosions and flames are done pretty well, although sometimes they feel like they lack substance and depth. External damage modeling is still virtually non-existent with the exception of tearing off gear doors. Bullet and flak or missile explosion holes, deformations to the airframe, and parts flying off were not apparent during our testing.
However, a nice graphical feature is that ground launched SAMs now give away their launching site with a burst of smoke and the missiles trail a visible smoke trail. This really gets the pucker factor going whereas before you might have just been sitting fat and dumb trying to figure out where the missile was coming from.
