When I heard that soaring was being modeled in FSX with the inclusion of the DG 808S sailplane I was a bit skeptical. I figured it was something they threw in there so they could add something more to the side of the box. I was wrong. Though not a glider pilot in real life my impression is that they did a really good job of adding the beautiful art of soaring to this software. The glider itself is elegant inside and out. The interaction with the tow plane is super and adds a lot to the experience. From takeoff to station keeping behind the tow plane to the eventual release of the tow cable; it all feels pretty authentic. For novice gliders (like me) there are unobtrusive visual aids to help you identify the columns of rising air (thermals) that prolong your flight. I’m not sure if ridge lift is modeled or not. The sounds of the variometer and the wind rushing past the bubble canopy are great. The challenge of timing your approach and managing your energy to safely make the runway is addictive and I hope to see many more soaring scenarios added to FSX in the future.
