Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The AI in SB Pro PE is better than most games, but I think it really has more to do with the scripting and talents of the mission creators than anything else. All the units seem to stay in proper formation, and are capable of locating and engaging the enemy. They seem to seek good fighting positions and defensive positions well. It is nice to finally have a game with teammate AI that has the ability to stay alive. You could easily decide just to hit “F8” and watch the battles and the AI work really well from above, but what fun is that? I do have one problem with AI drivers that drives me crazy (no pun intended). I’m not sure if this is just real world, or idiot drivers. I understand that the driver needs to pull up to a hull down position so I, as the gunner, can engage, but then as I’m tracking the target and getting ready to pull the trigger, the AI driver likes to back down out of view, causing me to lose the track. That’s probably how it’s done in real life, as not to become a target yourself but damn — just be still a little longer so I can shoot the bad guy.

The AI seems to be a lot better than me. The AI TC (Tank Commander) will call a target, but I can’t see a thing. Also, the AI seems to see a lot better and further then me. If I’m on the gun, I’m looking for the called target, but can not identify it. I then hit “F8” to cheat and look from the outside. I still can’t see them, but the AI gunner takes over then calls “identified” and engages. I remain stunned.

There are a few minor annoyances that supposedly can be fixed by the mission maker, or better yet, by using the mission editor. For instance, one night during a co-op game, the whole tank company got bogged down by pebble sized rocks. Something about the theme in the editor. Way beyond my understanding, but it ruined that mission for us and we all had to exit and pick a new one.
