Company of Heroes

Installation

Installation was easy as pie with the DVD version. I wish it was a downloadable game somewhere, which I find myself migrating to more and more. The total footprint for install is 2.92 gigs, which ain’t bad considering the demo itself was a gig-and-a-half. To play this game in all its glory, you need a good strong system. Because it’s graphics are scalable, you can also successfully play it on a moderate system.

You need to enter a CD key before gaming, and to create an account before going online. Your stats and game play records are tracked, and you can be ranked as a player.

Settings

You have the typical options of most control settings. You have basic keyboard and mouse settings, but cannot change any key commands. You have the graphics and sound settings that are typical with most current games, supporting many of the most popular resolutions. These settings include wide screen resolutions and most of the typical sound hardware.

Graphics and Sounds

What can I say? As much as I talk about making games with killer and realistic AI, Company of Heroes sights and sounds are amazing and a major selling point. From the opening movies to the cut scenes scattered throughout the game and all through each of the highly detailed and gorgeous missions, the graphics for this RTS are, in my opinion, second to none. Camera angles are fantastic and easy to move. You can zoom in and out with the wheel. Holding down the alt key and moving the mouse will frame the image anyway you want. Then to quickly get back into the default game image settings, you simply hit the backspace key twice. I find myself zooming in and getting low to the ground for that all important screenshot. Night effects, head lights, sparks, fire, tracers, and fantastic animations. They’re all there in this one. The only thing I’ve seen done better in other games is the flame thrower effect. But it still done well in Company of Heroes.

The cut scenes are incredible because they pull you into the story. After a long fought battle I’ve seen a squad sharing a bottle of confiscated “grape juice”, and the expressions on the men’s face when the captain walks by expresses the tense situation. I’ve seen a machine gunner go a little crazy and fail to “cease fire”, get yelled at by the captain and give a smirk and a wink to his assistant gunner. All giving you the impressions of emotions and real men doing all this very serious hardcore killing. The animations are incredible and complete. You’ll see the machine gunners swap out magazines, and you’ll see artillery loaders in action.

Right next to graphics is the incredible sounds in this game. Fantastic work done with everything including the firing of the weapons, the rumble of the tank tracks, the buzz of the planes, the blast of the artillery, and the screams and agony of the men. You can be sitting in a nice dark fighting position listening to the birds sing, then suddenly hear a distance rumble, the birds stop, the rumbling gets louder and louder, the foundation starts to shack and rattle, then the next thing you know all hell has broken loose. Machine gun fire fills the air, explosions, and then the sounds of death begin.

The sights and sounds in this game are some of the best I have ever seen or heard from an RTS (understanding my previously stated position on RTS games, and my lack of playing many of them).

By the way, the speech files for this game are rated M for mature. There’s a lot of strong language and swearing. Especially when it hits the fan. Let’s just say the game’s language is harsher than what is acceptable for me to say in this article.
