Review: Medal of Honor vs. Call of Duty: Black Ops

Extra Section

Medal of Honor Tier 1

Medal of Honor has a special section in the game called "Tier 1", which is essentially single player missions done on a leader board. Complete the missions from the single player campaign in "par" time (or better) and you unlock ribbons, medals, and more missions. That’s cool, except the leader board is ridiculous. A mission that should take a tactical player 3 minutes to play has to be done in 30 seconds. And the best are doing it in 10 seconds! That means those players are sprinting full speed from point A to point B mowing down anyone in their way. Sure, it might be fun once but this extra session of missions is just ridiculous and a waste of time. They're only for those true action gamers who probably play the same way in multiplayer sessions. Stats and skill level, not quality gameplay is all that matters.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombie Mode

Zombie Mode returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Zombie is very popular and some avid players only use this mode of the game. It’s the only mode that gives you four player co-op and with friends it is a lot of fun. Your team is locked in a location, zombies are breaking in to eat you, and you must repel the attacks, gain points, buy new and better weapons... and continue. I’ve never been a big fan of zombie mode preferring to spar with the realistic bad guys, but it is a lot of fun.

Extra Conclusion:
Winner - Call of Duty: Black Ops
Zombie Mode

The Medal of Honor Tier 1 "skill tests" are a joke and will only appeal to a twitch gamer. The Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombie Mode is great fun and includes four player co-op.

Theatre Mode

A feature unique to Call of Duty: Black Ops is Theater Mode where you can watch replays of all your played games, capture in-game screens, and make video clips up to 30 seconds long. If you link your You Tube account, the video clips will auto upload and publish. The theatre mode is a cool tool that all games should include. Below are a couple of examples from my YouTube account.

Conclusion

I will tell you all to get both games just to play the single player campaign, just for the experience of one play through... but probably not at the current price.

Medal of Honor is a fantastic and emotional story of true soldier action in the opening days of the war on terrorism. Unfortunately it’s only 5 hours long making it not worth $60 USD.

Call of Duty: Black Ops also has a good story and is spread out through recent history covering a number of wars and combat operations. It’s longer than Medal of Honor, but not as emotional or realistic story wise.

If you only play multiplayer, then Call of Duty: Black Ops is the clear winner.

Although I really liked the multiplayer in Medal of Honor, and they did a few things better than Call of Duty: Black Ops, for your money Call of Duty: Black Ops represents a better multiplayer with well made maps, tons of weapons, and perks. Call of Duty: Black Ops will be played online much more than Medal of Honor.

Of course, I still personally think Battlefield Bad Company 2 is the best multiplayer action shooter. It is better than either Medal of Honor or Call of Duty: Black Ops. But I can’t count it in this review, can I?
