"First Impressions" Review: Empire: Total War™

Conclusions...For Now

This game has all the potential of being one of the greatest, if not the greatest RTS ever made. This is a huge RTS. There is just so much to do, and so much to play. You can never run out of things to do. A complete winner and a "must have" for RTS fans.

SimHQ Review - Empire: Total War™In summary, I'd say this about Empire: Total War:

  • Fantastic graphics, sounds and music, and effects for so many units — yet still able to maintain reasonable framerates.

  • So many options and play modes it's like two games in one — a grand turn-based strategy game and a detailed, action-filled battle mode.

  • For single player, you have a number of land, sea, siege, and scenario missions to play in addition to two really good and detailed campaigns.

  • For multiplayer you have the same minus the campaigns, plus you can go one-on-one, or buddy-up for two-on-two games. And the multiplay is stable.

  • I have had issues with the “Replay Battle” feature, as others seem to have had. That’s my only technical issue so far with Empire: Total War.

  • The enemy AI is do-able, but does seem to have some problems as most of these types of games seem to have. Sometimes you need to micro-manage a little too much. For example, there was a scenario where I set up some riflemen to protect my artillery pieces, but when the enemy cavalry charged in attacking hand-to-hand, the guards just stood-by and watched. But I still say the few "version 1.0" negatives of the game aren’t game killers, and there is plenty to love here.

Get the game, learn some military tactics, and maybe even learn some history in an exciting new way.
