Space
Shuttle: The History of the National Space Transportation
System
by Dennis R Jenkins. It is very detailed (in some
ways almost a Space Shuttle technical manual) and extremely
well illustrated history of the entire history of the
United State's efforts to develop a reuseable space
transportation system (from WW2 on), and I consider
it very much worth it's 43$ price.
Test pilots: The story of British test flying, 1903-1984 (Willow books) Don H. Middleton, Willow Books (Collins), 1985; ISBN 0-00-218098-7. Black & White, with B&W Pictures. A very readable account of test flying from a pilot's point of view; Written in a very "British" way and reinforced with a lot of anecdotes,
this is concentrates on mainly first and second world war aircraft
through to early jets/post war work, probably because those were the
golden ages of test piloting and new aircraft design.
