Patches

First, make sure you have patched up RBR to v1.02. These patches contain bug-fixes, add some optimization, and ensure that the front wheels turn in replays. If they do not turn in your replays you are not patched up properly. The patches are available from the official site here:

ModCollection

A very easy to use and safe way of starting off modding Richard Burns Rally is to use the excellent Richard Burns ModCollection. I've used it a lot and have never experienced any problems with it. It is a quick way to switch driver names based on season, adding random banners along the stages, adding the camera hack that let's you vary the views, trying out different cockpits so the gauges are placed properly in front of the driver, and most importantly it adds some useful plug-ins like the Single Rally Plug-in that let's you drive any single rally. It also contains RBRNet v2.02 by Racer_S (Dave Skotnicki), that will add multiplay over IP.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer with Richard Burns Rally is great fun and I have enjoyed online races with some good friends on several occasions, using the RBRNet add-on. Generally you will see the other drivers as ghosts so you will know how you are placed in relation to them.

The options in terms of add-on multiplayer packages are astounding and I must admit a bit befuddling. Which package is the best and most widely used? I'm afraid I can't answer that question in detail because I don't know and haven't tried them all. My best advice would be to research with leagues running RBR online and use the package that they recommend.

RBRNet by Racer_S is available in several versions so it is good to agree with your friends which version to use. Perhaps Kai would be kind to update the fabulous ModCollection with the latest version of RBRNet. That would be terrific!

RBRNet3.0 Join through Lobby

Make sure to agree who is server and who will join as clients. The clients join via the Lobby:

RBRNet v2.2

RBRNet v3.0b

Another package for multiplay is RBR Online v1.3.41, which requires registration with RBR-Online.net. This would be a suitable package if you wish to race regularly, in a Championship-like format.
