Getting the Most Out of Your Virtual
Racing Hobby
Part IV: Learning To Race
by Chunx
This Replay Shows an Early Apex Error
Introduction
In Part IV, our final installment
of our Sim Racing Tips, we'll discuss how to use the replay
feature to refine your technique, and how participating
in a race can be significantly different from turning hot
laps in a private practice session.
Replay Analysis
Like
a football team reviewing the game tapes on Monday, racing
sim replays offer more than mere entertainment for the sim
racer. Watching replays is crucial to understanding where
errors are being made, and how improvements can be made. As
touched on earlier, replays should be viewed both in cockpit
and in chase view, with an eye on things like the racing line,
gear selection and shift points, braking point, braking point
visual references, max speed before braking, speed at turn
in, speed at apex, position of car before and after a corner...
the list can go on and on. But try to review not only single
hot laps, but also entire practice sessions to see where inconsistencies
are and how to correct them. In real time from the cockpit,
you may think you are tracking the correct racing line. But
in the depressurized environment of the replay, errors may
be more readily apparent.
If you have the chance to download
and watch someone else's replays, do it. Everyone makes errors,
and many folks will have better technique than you in various
parts of the course. Watching other folks' replays with a
critical eye and noting their errors and techniques can help
you better identify areas where you can improve.
