My Mind's Racing
(or I’m Driving Myself Crazy)

by Tom "20mm" Hayden

Racing now, insanity later!

I have a revelation to make: I talk to myself.

Not out loud, or at least not very loudly, but I do talk to myself. I ask myself questions and then provide the answers. You could say that I have an “Instant Chat Room” in my head, where I am the sole participant.

Some of you may be surprised at this. Most of you, I suspect, are not, and in fact are thinking to yourselves as you read this, “Yeah? Tell me something I don’t know, psycho-dude!”

You know what all this proves, right? It proves you talk to yourself, too. Of course you do! We all do. Nothing to see here. Perfectly normal.

Well, unless you’re the guy dressed in ripped and worn fatigues and a 1942-vintage Army pancho, standing on the downtown city street corner and yelling at the world, “They’ve got my pencils! They’ve got my pencils!!!” Strangely enough, even this may be pretty normal, assuming you own a pencil stand, just got ripped off, and for some reason no one is paying any attention to all the racket you’re making.

So talking to yourself is either normal (what you and I are doing right now), pretty normal (yelling on the street corner after your pencil stand was ripped off), or abnormal (yelling on the street corner about pencils you never had) — depending on what you’re saying, the volume at which you say it, and the circumstances of the moment.

But what about talking to yourself while driving your favorite auto racing simulation, rFactor, GTR, or GT Legends? What if you’re saying things to yourself such as:

"Slow in-Fast out! Fast in-Slow out? Oh Crap, where’s my Ross Bentley book?"

"Drive smooth Jerk!"

"You just passed the turn-in point! Moron!"

"Crashed again! #@%&!!"

"AI drivers coming up fast!… where’s the .50 cal?"

"Brake… brake NOW... brrrrrrrraaake!! Auggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"

Were you to hear this one-sided conversation coming from my den, you might start thinking to yourself that, maybe, ole 20mm has just lost his pencils, right? [Editor’s note: His wife certainly does.]

Brake, brake, brrrrraaaaaaakkkkkkkkee...
