Feature: A Wet Day at Goodwood

Back To Page 2

Sitting in the grandstands out of the rain allowed us to watch several more cars go by including everything from the 1906 that won the first Grand Prix to Richard Petty in some of his old NASCARs to a Penske IRL car to the latest grand prix and sports car machinery. A particularly nice touch was trying to place the Schumacher’s Benetton Ford B194 and Damon Hill’s FW16 together in their demonstration runs – considering these were the actual cars involved in the title deciding collision in Adelaide that year it seemed brave of the organizers to wish to allow the possibility of history to repeat itself! An interesting note was watching Bruno Senna drive several of his uncle’s cars. For those who remember back to the events of Imola in 1994 it seemed strangely poignant to see the evocative yellow Senna helmet colors back in the Lotus Renault (in which he won his first grand prix) and the McLaren MP4/4 in which he and Alain Prost won all but one of the Formula One races in 1988.

For Grand Prix Legends fans much of the 1967 grid was present including Jim Clark’s Lotus, Dan Gurney’s Eagle Westlake and Sir Jack Brabham’s BT49. As you can see from the photos access is not just allowed but is encouraged. As you can see from the pictures I stuck my head in a few cockpits just to show what it really is like looking down those long noses in the real cars that raced and Kylami, Spa and the Nurbergring before they were sanitized beyond recognition.
