Review: GTR2

Using the included dedicated server proved to be the better choice. The possible cheaters turned out to be okay after all... well, sort of. The lag was down and the ping's were very acceptable.
GTR2's multiplayer from the testing we've been able to do seems extremely functional if you're using the dedicated server option. I've had online races with low ping's and no warp or lag (inside this country).
The dedicated server will look rather familiar to owners of GTR.

Early indications on various boards seem to indicate that the bandwidth required to host a race now is less demanding of your internet connection. However, some reports of trouble when the number of participants reach and exceed 20 have surfaced. GTR2 claims to support up to 28 players. This number of approximately 20 players may be a crucial point in the multiplayer code where the demands on bandwidth rise significantly, or it may simply be down to servers being overloaded or badly set up.
It has been noted by users in the SimHQ Motorsports forum that while you can easily set up a race with your mates, the options for the host are somewhat limited, e.g. it is still not possible to insert AI drivers in an online race. Furthermore it's been observed that features such as the sharing of set ups between drivers in the same race, banning wreckers, and voting is not implemented in GTR2 multiplayer.
But where is the standalone server version? "guod" comments..."Note to developers: Always make available for downloading a freestanding, dedicated server. It's not that I mind spending the money to buy the product to get the server. It's the issue of installation from CDs or DVD to a remote server. Not everyone is located in the same building as their dedicated game server."
