Shootout #2: The Caterhams
by Jens
"McGonigle" Lindblad

Introduction
Almost half-a-century ago, Colin Chapman designed the Lotus Seven as a direct manifestation of his design philosophy following his dictum that a car should be:
- Lightweight
- Small
- Lightweight
- Well-handling
- Lightweight
Then you could put just about any engine in the car and it would go as fast if not faster than heavier and more powerful contemporary car makes.
The Seven is still in production by companies such as Caterham cars and Westfield, producing derivatives of the original and keeping alive the tradition of lightweight, small and nimble cars with no creature comforts such as air conditioning, ABS, and ESP. As an option, it is possible to have the factory install a heater!
Caterham offers several models to suit your needs and within each range of models there are numerous variations in terms of engines, suspensions and other options.
We now have not one, not two, but three different choices of Caterhams to run in simulations courtesy of Live for Speed, the Caterham expansion to RACE and the Caterham mod for rFactor. In the following feature we'll take each of them out for a drive.
