Review: RACE 07™ The Official WTCC Game

It’s a Little Empty in Here…
A good multiplayer experience is a big must-have for PC racers. After messing around with Xbox Live and Forza Motorsport 2, I figured out why. The single-player AI in RACE 07 is smart, and they can make mistakes you can capitalize on, just like normal, living, breathing drivers. Human AI is an entirely different kettle of bass and the level of immersion simply wipes the floor with the single-player experience.
RACE 07 is no different than its predecessors and it continues the tradition of stable, enjoyable net code. One little problem. No one’s there.

There are two ways to race online with this title. RACE 07 includes the Steam application as a measure of copy protection. This is my first experience with this form of anti-piracy measures and it has yet to cause my computer to burst into flames or download my entire checking account and credit card information to a bank in Nairobi, so I suppose it’s a success.
You can use Steam to launch a dedicated server that can be found in the game server list populated by Steam when you fire it up. You will not find anyone to play this way. It could be because very few of us like having Steam on our rigs. The other, more effective, method is to launch the multiplayer system through the game itself. I found a lot of public servers but they were essentially deserted.

The F3000 class has got to be the most likely candidate for Most Fun Multiplayer Racing Experience Ever. These baby F1s are crazy as hell, fast as a scalded cat, and it’s always more fun when you know the guy sailing down the track with you in the same deathtrap. I’d like to suggest a SimHQ event around these little monsters.
