Feature: The Closing Duel

Back to Page 4

Vikz

He definitely had much more top speed as we headed into the braking zone for T1 and in my eagerness to keep "Goon" from diving down the inside, I braked much too late and after a "Nooooooooooooo!!!" from my teammate, watching from the pits, and myself, I proceeded to take the scenic route around T1 on the grass. I thought that, as they say, was that.

While trying my hardest to keep the car going in a straight line and not spinning it around on the grass, I heard an almighty crash and wondered if there was still hope after all. The rear tyres on the Dimwit A car had finally had enough and as "Goon" was slipping by on the inside to retake the lead, they let go and "Goon" spun into the Armco barrier on the inside of T1.

After seven hours and fifty eight minutes of the eight hour race completed, both of us were trying to hand the race to the other on a platter. Thomas charged into our Teamspeak channel and demanded a rematch ASAP!

I managed to get the car back on track ahead of "Goon", who had to do a three point turn to get going again.

Gareth

I think about a lunge up the inside, err on the side of caution, then see Vikz lay a thick line of rubber in to T1.

He goes way off the track, and I'm through! It can't be true!

Sadly, while I'm watching Vikz I've neglected my braking, have to scrub too much speed off too late, and the right rear throws in the towel.

I spin in sympathy, and whack the barriers.

I've just chucked the team's one chance away, in a split second.
