A Eulogy for CART

Introduction

Some months ago a dear friend left us. Not so much with a bang but more with the apathy and inevitability that was the conclusion to several years of failing health.

I’m talking about Championship Auto Racing Teams a.k.a. CART, IndyCar, ChampCar, etc. which closed its doors for the final time this spring after the last ever ChampCar race at Long Beach, one of the most revered and prestigious circuits on the calendar. Assets were sold of on eBay and if you were quick and had the money you could have bought the original pace car.

This is to pay homage to what was once a great motor racing series. A series which will be missed by the fans even as we face the truth and know that there was every bit of sound reason for unifying and consolidating the two open wheel racing series’ in the US into what will hopefully once more become one healthy series with full grids, widespread TV-coverage and full attendance.
