Review: Logitech G25 Force Feedback Racing Wheel - Part I

Availability

The Press Kit states that the G25 is a “limited edition” wheel, and while I hear that it should be available at least through the end of 2007, that’s not a long time for this product to be offered on store shelves. Basically a worrier at heart, I am concerned with what the future may hold for sim racers regarding the continued support of Logitech. Here they’ve provided us a well-crafted and feature-filled, mass-produced racing controller, only to tell us they won’t make it for very long. Does that mean Logitech is spending even more development capital as we speak, and something even better is in the works? Or does it mean that, because the simulation niche is so small that the G25 is Logitech’s “farewell” to supporting the sim racing community? Or, is this merely a marketing ploy to boost sales in the first year?

The G25 makes any desktop look great.

And because the G25 sports some fairly robust design features and metal components, the product could be expected to survive many years of use... until the pots wear out or something breaks. What then? Will the “G26” be out there, or will we have to step back down to Momos? Or will Logitech even be in the controller business? Only time will tell, but I for one am a bit pessimistic about it, and don’t like to feel pressured to buy a product “before it’s too late,” regardless of the business motivation driving that statement.

Next: In Part 2 "Chunx" looks at each component of the G25.
