Just for a change from "When it will be released"

Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 11/05/07 03:45 PM

Ok, now. Anyone wants to visit Hendon with a good photocamera?

We need photos of the Meteor F.8. So, if you want to fly it over Korea - don't hasitate to send us photos of this bird.

We have, as usual, paricular perverted interest to varios holes, like: landing gear wells, flap wells, airbrake wells, cockpit, as well as other parts: wing fillets at the engine and fuselage, fin to fuselage joint, stab to fin joint, canopy, etc., etc.
Overall walkaround with general views from various sides will be usefull too.

Thanks in advance to those, going to help. ;\)

A shame - I was at Hendon two weeks ago! But I have a shoddy camera anyway, so no great loss.

Anyone contemplating it, Hendon's a great place to visit. Loads of fascinating stuff from all eras. Be advised, minimum card spend at the cafe is £10 so bring cash or your own lunch if you don't eat much.

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 11/05/07 08:57 PM

Isn't there a better chance to find someone if you ask in the IL2 Forum or the Zoo?

Anyway, if nobody else in the London area can do it I would make the loooong and boring journey from Leeds until mid December. Would that be sufficient time wise?

Anybody knows how helpful they are at Hendon? Will they give you access to the cockpit?

Coincidentally I'm planning a trip to the RAF museum at Cosford in a few weeks - is there anything you'll need from there? Here's their aircraft (displayed on possibly the worst website in the world) http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/collections/aircraft/aircraft_collection_cosford.cfm

I still have a rubbish camera but I'll try to find someone who's got a better one. I suppose Kodak Crap-o-Camera is better than nothing anyway...

edit: they have a prone-pilot F8, the Meteor prototype, the NF.14,and a T7. Also the Valiant, an Argosy, York, Lincoln, Canadair Sabre...

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 11/06/07 08:27 AM

Well, actually we are interested in photos of any F.8 or FR.9 (which is F.8 with cameras in the nose section). I mentioned Hendon, because, judging from i-net photos, it is displayed with landing flaps lowered. And this is one of the areas, we are interested in.

As for the prone-pilot F.8, the aiframe and the rear cockpit should be almost the same, as in the standard F.8. So, if you could make shots of the landing gear wells, flap wells, wing fillets and the rear cockpit - that would be very helpful. Well, or at least anything from the listed above...

Sabre would be interesting also, particulary the cockpit. But it is a loe priority, since, basically, this model is done already.

Sure. I will appriciate detailed photos of any Meteor F.8. As I wrote above, I asked about that particular one at Hendon, because it seems to be the only one displayed with flaps lowered.

So, if you can take photos of the parts and views, listed in the first post - we will greatley appriciate this, for sure.

Also, another question to Londoners: can you adwise on how to get to Hendon museum from London, using public trasportation. One Russian guy plans visit to London in the beginning of December and promissed to make few photos also. But he asks the directions to the place.

The 100+ full-size photos are in the following Powerarchiver zip-file:

There is also a flying F.8 located in Australia, located here Aussie F.8 , I think it may be an idea to contact them as they may be able to assist you with flying references.

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 11/27/07 02:27 PM

Hi,

First of all, sorry for the late reply. We were in the middle of certain organisational changes lately, which took whole my attention.

Due to the above our priorities slightly changed and Meteor have been moved down in our "to do" list. So we now have more time to assemble even more reference for it, which is, actually, good.

Huge thanks to everybody, who already supplied us with refernce, particulary to Freycinet. Hope, the floor in the museum wasn't too dirty. \:\)

As for the Australian F.8, I think and hope, we already have a contact with them. ;\)

However, that doesn't mean, we don't need any more refs on that plane. Taking in account, what we already have, the main priority now is the cockpit.

Appart from the Meteor, we are also interested in walkarounds and detailed shots of the following planes:

Avro Anson Mk.I

Gloster Gladiator Mk.II

Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF

Bf.108

Hello!

That's funny I would not have associated those planes with 'project Galba" ...So I gather you are subcontracting! But didn't we see a long time ago (2 years) 3D renderings of these planes? Does that mean their development was stopped all this time?

Copies of many Bf 108 Manuals you can get here:

But you will know this address I guess. All manuals in digital form on a CD are 50 Euros, look for "Messerschmitt Bf 108 B und D Kompendium".

G'day SaQSoN

There are some F.8 Cockpit walk-arounds here:

.....and some more BAF F.8 shots here:

There is also a T.7 about 2km from where I work that could be useful for landing gear and wing detail shots, if you still need that sort of info I can visit the museum which is something I have been meaning to do for a while anyway, they also have a DAP Beaufighter Mk.21 (A8-328) which could also be useful for some comon detail references. Just let me know.

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 11/27/07 11:21 PM

Thanks for the links.

I guess, some photos of the Mk21 won't hurt. \:\) So, yes, we'd be glad, if you'll make and post or upload them somewhere.

As for what parts we may need - just a usual "suspects", as described in Meteor request: landing gear and wells, flaps, fillets, cockpits, some particulary curved surfaces, various small details, etc.
Some general views from different angles would be usefull too.

That is why.

No problem Saqson, I am happy to help and pay a bit back for all my enjoyment with Il-2 etc. You can also see it as a down payment for my hopefully future enjoyment with BoB and other sims in the SoW series!

At the Brussels museum the have a French post-war produced version of the Bf.108: the Nord 1002 Pingouin. Would it be any help to have photos of that one you think? Maybe it is too different from the German original, I don't know...

Anson Radio specialised in detecting German radio homing beams (exact date of use of this I dont know). Reading the text it seems like this would be a rare piece of equipment:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y129/major-setback/AnsonRadio.jpg

Video of the radio in place!:

http://www.spitfirespares.com/SpitfireSpares.com/Pages/radio.html

Note on the radio seen in the video (from the above link):
"Churchill ordered a flight to try to detect the beams. Avro Anson's were equipped with an American Hallicrafters S-27 (then the only known receiver capable of receiving the 40 MHz signal) The Anson was far from ideal being slow, cold and extremely noisy. It was the only aircraft capable of carrying the radio set and the motor-generator set required to power it that could be spared. The motor-generator was required because the S-27 was a mains powered set but the Anson only had a 28 volt DC electrical system.

The German Lorenz directed an aircraft down a line, so two crossed beams could be used to fix a single spot. Several systems based on this idea were studied through the 1930s. Lorenz had a range of about 30 miles, enough for blind-landing but not good enough for bombing raids over England. In addition the beams of Lorenz were deliberately set wide enough that they could be easily picked up at some distance from the runway centre line, but this meant their accuracy at long ranges was fairly limited. This was not a problem for blind landing, where the distance covered by the fan-shaped beams decreased as the airplane approached the transmitters, but for use in the bombing role this would be reversed and the system would have maximum inaccuracy over the target".

More information on this sort of interception (I have'nt read all of this , so it might be another system):

Well, a sextant is one of the oldest pieces of navigational equipment that exists! - It would be called a bubble sextant, because they used it from inside the perspex bubble on most of the multi-engined aircraft of WWII.

It was also used by Coastal Command to hunt u-boats at the start of the war.

During 1938-1940 it mainly used as coastal patrol aircraft (not just sub chaser). It was also designed initially for this role.

Up to 1940.. Coastal Command duties.
1940-1942... Employed for air sea rescue.
1942 onwards. Trainer for pilots navigators and air gunners, and was extensively used for communication and liason duties.. \:\)

Hi,

Thnaks again, major-setback, this is all usefull, as usual. I've almost finished the Anson by now and your help was very importnat for my work.

We now need more refs on bomber variants of Do-215. I guess, it is more difficult task, since, as far, as I know, no plane of that type exists by now.

If anyone have photos, or pictures from manuals, which haven't yet been published in various books - feel free to post them here. ;\)

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 03/05/08 03:16 PM

Well ... a quick glance at http://www.ww2.dk shows that the Do-215 was not used as bomber but as strategic recon aircraft and (for a short time at least) nightfighter. If you decided to model it thoroughly then do so as a recon plane. It would offer a new type of mission and role for the player ;\)

If you are going to do recon do a JU-86P. I hope you are not keeping the tradition of making rare aircraft while keeping out necessary models like IL2 has done!!

Anyway, here is another question for you: which propeller should be modelled for the LW Bf-108 of the BoB period? There were many variants and we can not decide, which to model. 1C also doesn't have answer for us, so may be someone here may suggest something?

Hello SaQSoN!

According to my info, the first "military" 108 was the 108B2 which received mostly a fixed pitch Heine wooden propeller even if some of them also got a fixed pitch Schwartz wooden propeller (a.k.a. the "Storch" propeller: see images of the Lufthansa D-EFBW, which may have a modern equivalent, though) or an Argus mechanically-variable pitch propeller (system also used on the Fw-189 or the Arado 96B).
The 108D1 variant which was the most produced during the war, in Germany first and then in France after 1941 received the Me-P7 mechanically-variable pitch propeller. The Me P7 propeller is the one where the propeller plane of rotation is very much forward of the spinner (look at photos of the D-ESBH belonging to EADS) and where the pitch adjustment system is purely mechanical in opposition to the Argus which has an aerodynamically assisted pitch variation system (the famous bladelets on the spinner).
For what can be seen of the early SoW-BoB Bf-108 screens (2 years ago!!!) the model is based on a modern variable pitch propeller (see the Lufthansa D-EBEI).

My 2 cents

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 05/03/08 06:30 AM

Thanks for the answer. So, I guess, we'll go on with the Heine prop...
Posted By: JVM

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 05/03/08 08:04 AM

The conclusion is that there never was any "standard" Bf-108 in respect of the propeller type...The Heine fixed-pitch was the most prevalent, however the other types of fixed-pitch or mechanically-variable pitch propeller were also valid; most probably a same aircraft could have been equipped with each of them at any time depending on the vagaries of war, supply structure, end-of-war chaos...
If the Bf-108 were to be made in a flyable aircraft (and you are the only one to know...I will not ask!) it may be a good idea to model one of the variable pitch propellers, the primary trainers which were talked about a while ago being fixed-pitch (Bu-131/Fw-44)...

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 05/03/08 07:51 PM

Well, 108 will not be flyable, at least, not in the release. And there aren't plans to make many different variants of it. So, we need to make the most "generic" appearence of it.
Thus, if Heine was most used type of the prop, then we will go for it.

Anyway, thanks again for the help to everyone!

Are you aware of this site?

If you have problems finding references for German instruments this is the site to go to. I found some pictures of Do17Z gauges. Just go through the instrument section ans search for "17". They also have lots of Documents in the "Archive" section.

Re: Just for a change from "When it will be released" - 05/13/08 05:03 PM

Thnaks.

Yet, we are not building any BoB cockpits at the moment and do not plan to. As far, as I know, all BoB planes, we are responcible for aren't planned as flyable for the release.

Now I need something different. Can you help with plans, or, at least, with photos of various small tugs, barges, small fishing boats/trawlers, coastal vessels and other small craft used in ports and rivers during 1940-1950 in Westren Europe and/or Korea?

We need to model something generic, suitable for both BoB and Korea to liven up rivers and port facilities.

Foobar and some others were thinking about modeling barges a couple of month ago but they never passed the stage of collecting information. Here a couple of things they found during their search:

Finnish ships (for some there are plans if you click on the Names:

Probably not relevant for you but good plans:

If you have problems finding references for German instruments this is the site to go to. I found some pictures of Do17Z gauges. Just go through the instrument section ans search for "17". They also have lots of Documents in the "Archive" section.

Thanks for that link! I've had a German airspeed gauge for a while now, but I had no idea what type of aircraft it may have been fitted to.

It's a 1940 model that was fitted to the He 111, Ju 52, and the Do 17.

Also found out my German exterior air temperature gauge was of the last model, made in 1944, and my German course indicator was made in 1942. Cool stuff! I could spend ages looking at that site. \:\)

Cool stuff! Where did you get the instruments from?

That site is great and the guy told me that he has now some hundret documents lying around that he needs to put online! Ranging from Pilot's notes to the technical description of the EZ42 Revi (which couldn't be included in '46 because of lack of references IIRC) as well as documents about jet engine developement. I wish some Museums would pick up on that and share their archives this way with the public. That would make life much easier for the sim-developers I guess.

I got them off eBay years ago. I try to pick up little odds and ends like that when I can, but the German stuff is getting very expensive when it comes to cockpit instruments. I also have an American oxygen flow indicator and an un-used German cockpit switch that was used in various German aircraft, still in the original packaging. Cool stuff. \:\)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the EZ42 when I saw what he has on his page about it. Looks like the Germans had the same idea as the American K-14 sight in regards to setting the crosshair to different sizes based on the aircraft the pilot was targeting.

Some very interesting Pictures:

Most of them are Freighters but on some shots you see harbour tugs, barges, etc. (look at the Rotenfels pics for example)

I hate to sound like a whiner, but wouldn't a small junk or sampan be more appropriate for Korea?

I hate to sound like a smart-arsh, but wouldn't you, please, re-read, my first post?

For some reason, I tend to believe, that sampan, or junk towing a 3 000 - 6 000 ton frighter isn't quite propriate picture.

By 1950s virtually all large ports in the world involved steam and diesel tugs to move ships inside ports and small coastal barges to unload ships at outside anchorage.

For more, or less obvious reasons we want this tugs, barges and cranes to be generic enough for use in most, if not any SoW theatre.

It is also more or less obvious, that we plan certain units, specific to each geographical location, we recreate. Fortunately, we don't need info on those ones just yet.

You might try contacting: http://tugspotters.xsbb.nl/

I doubt that there were very many kinds of tugboat in North Korea's major ports. So, any indepth research will probably yield very specific results. So, if the plan isn't to model two separate tugs (one for BoB and one for Galba) to prototypical standards, any generic tug will likely do about as well (or so is my thinking).

Hi, it's me again.

This time, I need anything, you can get for:

1. He-59C-2
2. He-115B-1

Also, if you will come across something interesting for Fw-200C-1, or CR-42, we may use it too, but that's less important, the the pair above.

We are mostly interested in cockpit areas and internal structures/mechanisms of this aircraft, as well, as their engines.

Thanks in advance and hope, you will be as helpful, as always! ;\)

Otherwise, go to one of the "when it will be released" or "BoB is vaporware" topics, please. :p

I am away on holiday at the moment. I will get to work searching for relevant material when I get back home, about 17 August.

I have quite good collection of refences for the He115's
I've built it 3 times, last time also internally, the only part I miss good coverage is the ceiling of the "kanzel" forward glazed compartment and also some missing info for the rear cockpit, but I know it very well.
I've got both photgraphic and text coverage information for it. I have info for all instrumentation and so on.
Only prob, I'm not at home now so I can't get acces to it untill after sept 20th if you can wait \:\)

Here my last Max model of the C model..

I don't know if any of this is relevant. It shows illustrated articles mine-laying (in river/water) and the possible use of the He115 for this purpose, though it seems to focus on a later part of the war (Stalingrad):

Hi, Nils.

We have finally started the He-115 and found, we have very few refs on it. We still waiting for a package of original manuals copies from that German website, but so far, we have almost nothing, except few books with not very good drawings and some bw photos.
So, we will gladly accept any reference, you would want to share with us.

Niels, now that Il-2 seems to be going "open", maybe there is a chance your wonderful model can get into the game, it would be fantastic for the Norway map! (to complement your houses and boats...)

I have one question, if I may ask: if your team is only beginning work on the He-115, what was the 3D model shown as SoW-BoB WIP 2 years ago, then? Are you now starting anew, or from this model? Was it a very prelimary work left aside until you could get the needed additional info?

Thanks,

JV

It was. The reasons, it was left aside are different, though.
We starting from this model, however, it is in a very basic stage. So, there isn't big difference if we would start it from scratch. It saves us may be a couple of weeks, at best.

This might interest you, it is a collection of munition boxes and stuff like this as being used by the Wehrmacht:

Should prove useful for texturing boxes etc.

Thanks, I forwarded this to 1C guys. We (the RRGS) do not make ground stuff for BoB, we do only planes and ships. But still any similar info would be very useful for Oleg.

And I know, they already did a lot of various ammo boxes, it looks, like they do a set of ammo and ammo boxes and other misc models for each ground unit/weapon in the game.

I afraid, mission builders in BoB will have a hard time browsing through literary thousands of objects in the game. wink

Not if there were someway of further categorizing them, beyond the most crude "static object" level.

Hardly. If there will be few hundreds of objects in just "ammo and ammo boxes" category.
And don't forget, that you'll have to select loadouts for vehicles, train cars, etc. wink

This might be interesting for the F-82:
