BDG = Bob Developers Group = group of independent coders that has organized to work on BoB source code (once it is released) in a coordinated effort to improve BoB.

Just thought I'd answer some questions that you might of have:

What, if anything, is going on with the BDG?

We have put together a group of coders and opened up a private forum on SimHQ. We have also established a project manager to head the project.

How can I access the private forum and why is the BDG forum private?

We are using it for organized communication between the coders and the project manager only. If you are an experienced coder, an experienced BoB player, have time to help and are interested in becoming a member of the group you are free to contact me at KC23@SimHQ.com. Please include your past experience in coding.

How will the public know what is going on?

We are developing a BDG web page to keep the public informed on what is going on. Until then I will periodically put up posts like this one. Hopefully it won't be too long before the web page though.

Has the BDG decided on what you are going to work on?

Nothing will be decided on prior to seeing the code. Generally speaking we will probably start off small and as we get more familiar with the code work our way into bigger and more interesting work. Stability, Bugs and then features will generally be hierarchy of things.

With countless lines of code how does the BDG every hope to figure what is what?

Rowan has helped with added information that will come with the code which should help. Chris (aka NotEnoughRed) and Dave (aka Rowan) are part of the BDG and will help in the process.

Will only BDG have access to the source code?

As I understand it the source code will be open to the public, but will not include the art and texture files. IOW, you will need to own BoB in order to work on it.

If it is open to the public won't that lead to lots of BoB versions?

Hopefully not. We organized the BDG to avoid just that. If there are coders out there that plan to work on BoB we encourage them to join the BDG so that we don't end up with multiple versions. We want it all incorporated into the same build. We have some original Rowan coders with us which should be invaluable to any coder wanting to work on BoB.

When and where will the source code be released?

SimHQ will likely at least mirror the code. When it will be released, is something that still hasn't been determined yet.

Will MiG Alley code be released also?

No official information either way has been forwarded to me or the group.

When can we expect to hear about the BDG group again?

As soon as there is something interesting to share. If the Web page isn't finished yet I'll put it up here otherwise you'll find it on the web page. The web page will be announced here and on the SimHQ news page.

What a postive step for the many of us, that still love this game. Tell ya what, I'll be on the sidelines, cheering the whole way.

Thanks for the update, KC. I must admit I have been torn between joy at the possibilities, and fear of the same. Knowing an effort is being put forward to have some organization just raised my spirits...and hopes for the future of what has become my favorite sim. Wish I knew coding...but COBOL was it, and that was many moons ago ( when the prevailing attitude was, PC's for home use? You must be kidding!! LOL ).

But if I can help with encouragement, then consider it done.

I will not lead, nor will I follow, and if you want to come through here you have 3 choices: go around; ask nicely; or bring a lunch -- you'll be here a while.

Myself and a certain friend of mine have some plans afoot for when the source code is released.

lol nealg,

The old COmmon Business Orientated Language I remember programming in that 10 years ago for a database application. A horrible antiquated language it was back then.

C++ isn't much better, but at least I kinda understand that a bit better

Great news KC ! I am a C and assembler coder from "way back when" but have no time for it now.

If you need help testing BOB give me a yell. I still play the game.

Cheers,
Sean.

Wow, such positive vibes going on here. The BDG thanks you very much for your support, however there seems to be a misconception about the group.

Everyone here is also part of the group and having access to the private forum doesn't mean anything special. The private forum is just so the coders can have their code talk back and forth without wading through a lot of other posts.

Feed back on this forum (regular bob forum)is very important to the coders and I hope everyone understands that. The web page (being developed) will be keeping everyone up to date so please think of BDG as pretty much anyone and everyone interested in seeing BoB move on to bigger and better things regardless whether or not they are coders.

I bring this up because I've gotten several request by non coders to join the private forum and I hate saying no to any one. So please please please realize that regardless of access rights into the coders forum don't feel that you are not part of the team. This whole process is for everyone and anyone who enjoys BoB.

KC,
Just out of curiousity, you've mentioned you have a project manager & programmers, do you have any people to actually do the code analysis? Do you feel you have a need for any?

Cheers,
Stonehouse

Would you try to understand and document the current code? Would you do peer review of our new code? Both would be *very* welcome.
