Well optimism is my middle name I guess. Made myself a very top end new system and immediately bought FSX when it came out. Quite liked it even tho the frame rate sucked most of the time. Bought myself Vista Ultimate 64bit in an attempt to modernise and be ready for the future only to find nothing works properly in that either because nobody can be bothered to spend some time making proper drivers for it, FSX did work however but actualy worse than my XP 32 SP2 install. 11 months down the line and here I am again, Vista is a good few months older, actualy have a few proper drivers for it so it can actualy make sounds and put a DX10 piccy on the screen ( still no drivers for a microsoft fingerprint scanner - go figure lol ), took the plunge bought myself the acceleration pack, sat here in some kind of abated breath wondering what the new DX10 features will look like, because ive never seen a DX10 game on my rig, and guess what, the damned thing is still a slide show, sure it all looks pretty when you start moving the sliders up, but all at a pace thats so slow that it ruins the FM's Uninstalled the damned thing again, will come back to it in another couple of years and see if there is finaly some hardware capable of running this shizzle at more than 20fps - by then of course we will prolly be on FS11 and some other shizzle they are gonna try and sell me. On a side note quite liked the new FM for the new chopper in the acceleration pack, althought I had to lower all the details to something which resembled FS3 to actualy get a smooth FM ! Ps. Didnt however notice anything groundbrakingly differnt with the "DX10" features however ???? Edited for grammar

What are your system specs? Just out of curiosity?

You better watch out Phantom Mark, you'll have all those "...if you can't configure your system to run a piece of software, even though your hardware far exceeds the recommended system specs, let alone the minimum specs, the same as a technical genius on brain steriods, don't blame Microsoft" gang chewing you a new ass
On that note, I do have bad frame rates, dropping below 10 occasionally, but mostly around 15-20. That isn't great, I know, but I have a very mediocre system:
Windows XP SP2 AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2 GB value Ram Gigabye nVidia PCI 7950GT 512MB
I agree though, that the frame rates in this game are ridiculous and I'm talking about people with much higher end PCs than mine.

Yes I know, Ive spent hours fiddling around with the damned thing in a vain attempt to make it run nice. I have also spent many hours trawling FSX related websites trying out various tips and tweaks, all to no avail.
I am pretty certain I got everything as good as I could, my system runs the Crysis demo at nearly full bling ( forces a max of HIGH detail ) which cant be bad for a nearly 1 year old system.
Watercooled Thermaltake Armor QX6700 @ 2933mhz Quad Core C2D 680i EVGA Motherboard 2gb Corsair 8500 Dominator Ram SB X-Fi Fatal!ty 8800GTX @ std clocks etc
I work in sims/games, doesnt exclude me from making mistakes with hardware config etc but I would say its a little more unlikely that I have completely overlooked something here.

Hell, I could make FSX run like a cheetah on that system! Wanna trade? My PC (see below) with XP32 and FSX running maxed out at 18FPS locked, against yours. It would be win/win.

Man that is blazing along :P If I cant see a minimum of a smooth 30fps then frankly its wasting my time - IMHO of course.

And 18FPS on your system is not good....I mean, it's good for FSX, but generally that is not a good return for the hardware you have. We're talking about a flight simulator here, not Quake... Also consider maximum autogen and scenery details (no road traffic 'tho), as well as billions of AI airlines.

Physics calculations need a steady frame rate, otherwise things become porked. Sub 30fps see's it near impossible to truly feel the full effect of any flight model in the way it was designed, anyone who tells you different is either lying or frankly has no clue what they are talking about.
Im quite happy to have a lesser frame rate, so I can fully enjoy the Flight Model instead, but Sub 30 like I said is just a waste of time.

I've found FSX at 20FPS is quite fine and smooth. I said it way back that for some reason FSX doesn't seem jerky at 20FPS. Maybe not for flying something like the Extra..but for the rest of it I find it isn't a problem. BeachAV8R

Physics calculations need a steady frame rate, otherwise things become porked. Oh..and the physics calculations for FS9 and FSX have never been stellar. Try doing knife-edge passes in the Extra 300 and you'll see that they are in no way, shape, or form very realistic..

Indeed, its a real shame that as that plane could be so cool to fly. I found the big jets, ( 737 + 747 ) quite fun to fly even at a lesser frame rate simply for the reasons you already stated, I guess I just got really pissed when I tried to fly that new chopper in Acceleration Pack and the frame rate was so bad that I could hardly fly the damned thing Im not selling them, guess I will just take a break and either wait until I have a more powerfull system or the devs finaly find a sollution to give some extra performance.

I guess if you can handle 20fps, then it's all g g g g o o o o o g g o o good. FPS doesn't m m m a a a a a tter. Anyhoo. Loving my 40fps in FS9. Looks basically the same as FSX. Unless I'm missing something. .... and I don't think I am. Seen all the reviews. Seen all the screenshots. I'll stick with FS9 and enjoy the 40fps.

I'm not. It is smooth for me. It isn't for you. I'm fine with that. Enjoy FS9 dude...we aren't trying to brainwash you or anything...we'd appreciate the same in return.

Right now, my system does FSX with it locked at 30 and it maintains it most of the time. I have Global Texture at max, traffic at mid range for all of them, other sliders at mid range. This is with SP2 (Accel). I have tried the other slides at 3/4 and the frames did drop to the 20s.
My specs
AMD Athlon X2 6400+ 2 Gigs Ram PC 6400 XFX 8800GTS with 640megs of ram
It runs silky smooth and for anyone that says that FS9 looks as good as FSX needs a new set of eyes.
I have FS9 with Ultimate Texture and have tried Birds Eye View and a couple of other enhancements packs, they don't look close to FSX in terms of visuals. BUT it does run on my machine at over 100fps.

The point is..different people like different things..and ridiculing anyone for liking FS9 or FSX just doesn't seem fair. Some folks have a grudge against FSX or FS9..and while it is interesting to see how wildly opinions can vary, it gets tiresome seeing the same old mud slinging over and over again.
I've got an FS9 install that is about as modded out as it can be. I think my FS9 install with Misty Fjords and Active Sky is pretty darn good looking and performs really nicely. For the hobbiest that enjoys adding in all of the extras (both free and payware) to FS9 I don't see any reason to leave FS9 for FSX. That said, straight out of the box FSX, in many aspects, equals or exceeds many of even a modded FS9 features...again..only in my opinion. Personally, my time has been whittled down to the point where I just want to install and fly..and FSX satisfies that desire. I've seen more and more things being released for FSX that will eventually cause me to go down the "modding" road of FSX..and I'm sure that time is coming soon. Since installing FSX though, I have only gone back to FS9 a few times for comparison reasons and each time I get a better appreciation for what FSX does well. If I only flew the Maule, Grumman & Caravan in FSX I'd consider the product to be worth the money.
And FPS, while obviously of paramount importance to some, hasn't really been a factor for me with FSX. I understand that with my system I can't slide the sliders to the max and fly over Seattle. I've gotten over that. I can, however, slide the sliders to high and do it with no problems. With FS9 I can turn everything on, all the add-ons, and have FPS in the 80s or greater...but I still prefer FSX because of both of the features of the program, and the quality of the visuals. FS9 fans shouldn't be threatened by that...stick to what you have if it is working for you.

Its strange, even after all the disappointment I still have the urge to re-install FSX and the Acceleration Pack just one more time, in the vain hope I can get it to run nice If someone can link to me to a definitive easy to use article which will help me setup the damned thing to run with my hardware im more that willing read it try yet again.
