Well it's turned into this, and heaven sent.

(didn't realize they would include flying buttresses)

This is going to be a very immersive sim. By the way are the flying buttresses AI only? \:\)

Thanks FR, very nice VikS and Co.

"It was looking out over the town from this hotel window that we first caught sight of the German war machine. Wish you were here. And that I was there". A postcard from Metz

Wait I see now the difference between the latest render engines and those from a few years ago. Looking at the postcard the air is unnaturally clear, as if after a rainstorm. No atmospheric perspective at that moment with the air swept clear of scattering dust and water molecules. The distant hills are very beautiful if a little too-blue, too much atmospheric perspective. It's tricky getting it right and a huge hit on framerate to make the nearby air seem alive with sunbeams and motes

Luckily no one's going to care at 60 knots "He flew through the arching buttress..." least of all me

Rowan's version had white doves I wonder what will fill the air over Metz apart from our planes. Stand down the man who said flak. To sum up will there be bird strikes. Or can they outrun us

Wonder if observation balloons can have an attached camera so we can pan around for small preview movies that would reveal nothing but the beautiful French countryside. Or is it Belgium

That would be "archie" and it definitely wasn't very accurate.

In Eddie Rickenbacker's 1919 WWI memoirs, Fighting Against the Flying Circus, he often referred to the archie as no more than a nuisance.

Archie was just a nuisance to those who were able to talk about it afterwards... \:\)

Very nice cathedral there. Wonder how its damage model is...

Archie is friendly anti-aircraft fire. The enemy's AA is called flak. That's the stuff I'm worried about. Until the Americans join in <runs away>

Ming, "Archie" was used to note all Flak fire, friendly and enemy.

"Archie": The name universally employed by British airmen to designate the anti-aircraft gun on either side. It was given in Flanders in early 1915, and followed a habit which has existed among gunners in the navies and armies of all nations since cannon were first used in battle. "Grandma" (the first British 15-inch howitzer behind Ypres), "Quick Dick" (for a high-velocity gun), "Percy" (an early name for a 4.7-inch naval gun in the field), are other examples. Why an anti-aircraft gun was named "Archibald" is a matter of mystery, though it is said that our own "archies" - since for a long time they could never hit the air anywhere near a German machine - owed the title to the music-hall song "Archibald Certainly Not."

(just for the record)

Just showing off that I know that flak is a German word give me my five minutes in the spotlight

The Germans called our flak Brenda they were quite bonkers back then weren't they and just a tiny bit sexist
