Pratt and Whitney R-4360-4W Radial Engine. Hughes Aircraft Owned For Sale
Pratt and Whitney R-4360-4W Radial Engine. Hughes Aircraft Owned :
Up for sale is a Pratt and Whitney R-4360-4W 28 Cylinder 3000 horsepower Radial Engine. Manufacture number is P3079. This engine is massive and turns heads unlike anything I've ever owned. I've had this engine for a while now and need the space. I pulled one of the top cylinders and found zero corrosion on the inside. I did not pull all 28. The gentlemen who owned it before me had passed away so I've been piecing together the history on the engine. All of the paperwork I have are copies. The original logbooks are missing. I believe them to have been kept by Hughes Aircraft. The first model R4360-4A engine was used on the H4 Hercules. This engine is an R4360-4W. The previous owner did find some info that said Hughes Aircraft had traded some 4A's for some 4W's. The Navy's Martin Aircraft AM-1 used these 4W engines. The big question is what aircraft was this used on at Hughes? I do not for sure know. Some have speculated it was on a prototype or a spare on the H4 Hercules. I won't guarantee any of that. Do your own research. I have not made any trips anywhere to look this info up. It could possibly be found. It comes with 3 boxes of spare parts some in their original packaging. It also comes with a letter from the Summa corporation where this engine was donated to the Boy Scouts of America in 1984 from Hughes Aircraft. The Summa corporation handled some of Howard Hughes business dealings. I also have a copy of the bill of lading where this was picked up from Hughes Aircraft and shipped to Signal Hill. I changed the wheels out on the engine stand and it rolls very easily. I shipped it with a local company who used a rollback truck. I'm selling this engine as a non working piece of history. What you see is what you get. Not for aircraft use. I believe it's a great candidate for restoration, but again not guaranteeing anything as I'm not a mechanic. I haven't torn down the engine to see what is or isn't missing. If the buyer wants to get this engine in running condition they will need to work with a certified engine repair shop to get it recertified. It is an unbelievable piece of history! I'll consider reasonable offers for this engine. No returns. I'll do the best I can to answer any questions. Local pickup only.
