Training Missions and a Closer Look at the Aircraft
LOMAC continues the Flanker tradition of great training missions to supplement the printed documentation. Due to the horrible manual these training missions are a must for the novice player. Unlike the manual, though, these are top-notch. Most of the screenies I took for this article came from the training missions, because they do such a great job of explaining the differences between Western and Russian aircraft and basic capabilities, and showcase the new aircrafts’ features. Veteran simmer Mark “Stinger” Shepheard, also known as “Shepski” to the simming faithful, authored these splendid tutorials. We’ll look at the module and the player-flyable aircraft as we explain.
Training missions begin rather basic, with a sort of qualification course that I skipped. Most hardcore simmers are familiar enough with the Flanker series, and LOMAC is so similar to its parents in basic controls, that one does not need to go there unless you really want to. The mission modules train you for the A-10, F-15, Su-27, and Su-25 aircraft. The MiGs are similar enough in presentation to the –27 that its avionics missions suffice for the MiGs as well. Training concludes with “Top Gun,” the best in-game presentation of basic fighter maneuvers I have seen since Jennifer Mitchell, of Escadrila 54 fame, made me a Bf-109G-2 track for IL-2 showing how to energy fight the Lavochkin La-5FN.
These screenshots show the diverse scope of the training missions.
