With the onrushing MiG-29s carrying long range air-to-air missiles I know we are probably already inside of their engagement envelope. In an attempt to break up their attack I order my element (wingman #3 and #4) to engage them. Wingman #4 fires first and later analysis will show he draws first blood with an AMRAAM kill on a MiG-29. |

Just as the element engages the MiG-29s I get a launch warning tone and my missile warning light illuminates! |

One of the -29s has launched an AA-10 at me so I break left and put the missile at my 6 o’clock in an attempt to out-run it. |

I punch in the afterburner and give up some altitude pushing right up to the sound barrier as the roar of the wind threatens to pull my external stores off and damage my jet. |

I request assistance from AWACS and they reply that they are looking for fighters but it appears as though the CAP flight is busy not only with MiG-29s, but the MiG-21s have merged into the fray. One of the ROK F-5s I had seen earlier is engaged by a MiG-21 and he jettisons his bombs in an attempt to escape. |

The AA-10 runs out of steam behind me and I turn back toward the strike waypoint and start sorting out the contacts.AWACS calls out the nearest threat as a MiG-29 only 7 miles away! I find him quickly on the radar, lock up the contact, but have to wait an agonizing few seconds for my AWACS “DECLARE” command to be responded to. |

With so much activity going on I have to be sure my contact is a hostile. As soon as I hear the words “confirmed hostile” I hit the missile launch button… |

…and my first AMRAAM scorches off the rail and goes “MADDOG” (active radar) immediately since I’m almost inside of minimum range. |
