“Es war sehr schön, es hat mich sehr gefreut…”
…translates to “it’s been very lovely, it was a pleasure”.
Our old Austro-Hungarian Imperator Franz Joseph used to say that after a good theatre play, and I’m sure if he was still walking around today he’d say the same about the AirPower05 show.
It’s one of the ironical things in life that a small European non-NATO country with a woefully inadequate air force continues to organize and arrange what amounts to one of the biggest air shows and meetings on the continent next to RIAT, Le Bourget and Payerne. And yet it happened again this year.
Despite the crazy weather (first of the hottest days of the year… then a major thunderstorm the next day) the organizers easily reached their goal of satisfying the about 250.000 visitors which came from all parts of the world. All the important international press was here too, showing once again that for a few days every other year, Austria can and does play its part when it comes to aviation and the love for it.
The one thing I regret is that I couldn’t cover the Red Bull Air Race for our readers, as this was right after the heavy rain storm and I was still sitting in my hotel room when Mike Mangold won with about eight seconds difference over Peter Besenyei. I do however have a shot of his very beautiful plane from the practice sessions.
All said and done, I hope you enjoyed the report and my images as much as I enjoyed writing and taking them. Thanks go to my friend Anthony for providing additional images.
SimHQ will have some monthly calendars upcoming from additional photos I took at AirPower05.
See you in two years at AirPower07!
