Total Air War: Training Mission #1 – Basic Aircraft Familiarizations Page 3

Total Air War

The cockpit consists of the Heads Up Display (HUD) and 7 panel displays that provide various functions. Within your TAW game directory there is a file called “TAWhelp.hlp”. Open this file and you will find a wealth of useful information that is mirrored by the manual. Under “The F-22 Aircraft” you’ll find a sub-menu called “Multi-Function Displays”. Opening this section will open an interactive cockpit that will allow you to learn all about the different displays in the F-22.

The first display we come across is the Combined Communications & Warnings MFD (CC&W MFD). This display shows communications information and system information. If you take damage this is a good location to start to assess how badly damaged you are. Since our F-22 this morning is clear of squawks, our CC&W MFD is blank. The buttons along the bottom labeled “R”, “DT”, and “SR” are for cycling the radio frequency, showing data text, and displaying a systems report respectively.

The center panel area contains the Up Front MFD and Control. The center of the UFC contains the Infra-Red Search & Track display (IRST) which is a passive sensor that allows you to track air and ground targets without emitting signals that would alert the enemy to your presence. We will cover the IRST later in training. Surrounding the IRST display are a multitude of buttons that control other aircraft systems. The buttons labeled R1 through R4 change the radio frequency. The button labeled “L” changes the IRST image to the LANTIRN picture. “WI” changes the IRST image to the WEAPONS IMAGE (for ordnance that has image broadcasting capability). “II” changes the IRST to the IRST image. “LI” locks the image to the selected weapon. We will cover these controls in detail later in training. Across the top of the UFC are buttons labeled E1 through E5 and EA. These are the Emissions Control (EMCON) level selection buttons. EMCON levels control how much (if at all) your aircraft sensors broadcast and the levels greatly affect your stealth characteristics. We will cover EMCON levels in later training. To the right of the IRST window are two toggles labeled “G” and “B” for landing gear and weapons bay doors respectively. Finally, in the upper left corner is a toggle labeled “TA” which toggles manual ACMI recording (Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation). The ACMI records flight data for later playback during mission debriefing. We will cover the ACMI in later training.

The top right MFD is the Artificial Horizon MFD which can be used if your HUD is damaged. It contains attitude data, heading, altitude, and speed. The buttons below the MFD toggle the artificial horizon (H) on/off, the pitch ladder (PL), and the “A” key will mirror the autopilot control panel on the MFD.
