I of the Enemy: Ril’Cerat Page 4

Back To Page 3

Fog of war is modeled in two ways, and that brings me to my second gripe. You’re supposed to be viewing the planet from orbit in your unit-control gear. But you have a black wall over everywhere your units are not at, til you uncover the map by going there. Even when you have uncovered the map, you cannot see the enemy units unless you have one of your units in line of sight. The second version of fog of war I don’t mind. You can see structures and see the terrain, and plan your activities accordingly. But the first, that I can’t stand. You’d think an advanced technological army defending their own planet would have maps of it! For me, it hurts the strategic planning in a game like this to not be able to see the battlefield before you engage the enemy. Given that unit line of sight is modeled… and modeled well, at that, since terrain affects it…this map-blackout ought to be deleted.

I of the Enemy: Ril’Cerat gives you five freeware missions. Unlike most game demos, Ril’Cerat is fully-featured in single-player mode. The missions grow in challenge as you scour the planet to find and destroy the main Unath base before your alliance crumbles. This is meant to whet your appetite for the full I of the Enemy game, which Matrix Games lists as “coming soon,” though you can buy it right now, direct from the developer for $24.95 by download. The full game takes you through three other planets, and has roughly 25 missions. It also has a mission editor and 8-player multiplay capability. If you like this style of real-time strategy game, I think you will like I of the Enemy, and you ought to give the war on Ril’Cerat a run before you take the plunge. I applaud Enemy Technology for its full-featured look at this new RTS, and we here at SimHQ hope it sells well for them.
