Multiplayer
The majority off all multiplayer games out there uses the latest patch, only a few for the retail version or 1.01. I have not been able to play multiplayer that much because I don’t use the 1.02 patch. During single player I noticed several bugs with that patch. The enemy moves and shoots through walls, which they should not. The last screenshot on the previous page shows this bug in action. Because of this I have only played multiplayer a few minutes before uninstalling and reinstalled the game. Keep in mind that I’ve not found any reports on the Internet about the bugs I encountered, they might show themselves because I used the same save games between different versions, and I have tested a few early levels from scratch and did not encountered the in-game bugs. Out of the box it was a bug free game and I don’t play multiplayer that often so I don’t mind not having 1.02 installed.
Regardless, multiplayer was just as intense as the single player part, so it was a lot of fun. You choose your server, and if it’s a team game you choose a team after you’ve entered the server and last you pick what kind of weapon you want to carry, you can only carry one but you can of course drop your existing weapon and pick up other weapons. And even tough the heavier ones are not available in the weapons menu they can be picked up in the multiplayer game. The game modes offered are deathmatch, team deathmatch, elimination, team elimination, capture the flag and slow-motion variations on the deathmatch and CTF modes. In the elimination modes it’s all about eliminating your enemies and staying alive, if you die you’re out of the reminder of the round. Team elimination is just the same, destroy the enemy but keep your self and your team alive. Slow-motion works as follows in multiplayer, there are reflex booster in the center of the map, that player that picks it up will gain points for each second that the reflex booster is held and will eventually be able to use it. The carrier will move twice as fast as everyone else and once the carrier is killed the booster can then be picked up by other players. And of course hand-to-hand combat is available in multiplayer as well.
Conclusion
The slow-motion effects are a lot cooler then what is offered in the Max Payne games. The beautiful graphics make the game amazing to watch and the AI makes combat outstanding. Although it nags me a bit that the single player part is a little on the short side, and with plot holes, I really enjoyed it the third time around and the amazing AI, as well as the fast paced multiplayer, gives the game replay value for the future. Right at the end it gets to super natural for a short period of time and that doesn’t do it for me, other then that it’s a good shooter. I’m looking forward to a sequel so all the questions can be answered and to be able to explore this story further. F.E.A.R. is a very good story driven shooter, the atmosphere and combat will suck you in.
