GRAW2

The AI

“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

Okay, maybe I will. After all, I do have an addiction to gaming. But listen up any of you programmers or game designers out there who are working on the next great tactical shooter. I want you to stop what you’re doing for a moment. Please stop investing all your development time in making the graphics better and improving sounds. I want you to concentrate on one thing and one thing only for the rest of your new games development… the Artificial Intelligence. I want the next shooter to be the best and greatest AI ever coded in a game.

I want…

…enemy AI to notice I just shot their buddy next to them and either take cover, and work to engage or flank me.

…the enemy AI to hear the grenade I just threw 20 yards away from them and react.

…them to go prone, jump behind cover, lay down suppressive fire and maybe even use bounding overwatch with suppressive fire to force me to either Rambo it, or tactically retreat to re-engage another way.

…to be flanked if I stay in the same place too long after letting myself be known.

…reinforcements called in on me.

…the game to make me react to its intelligence, not play it to my favor.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want uber enemy soldiers that can see through trees and shoot me at 1000 yards while running with one shot of an AK-47 (as in Armed Assault!). I don’t want it so hard I can’t complete or therefore enjoy the game. But someone has to stand up and say “no more stupid AI”!

And in my opinion, stupid AI is exactly what you get in GRAW2. The snipers and a few select distant enemy troops are crack shots and will take you out in a heartbeat, while most are so stupid they just sit there out in the open while you pick them off one at a time. The original GRAW had these same problems, but I think it gotworse with GRAW2. I am almost ready to declare that the AI in GRAW2 is just a hair better than Rainbow Six: Lockdown, which was the worst enemy AI I have ever seen in computer gaming. This is unacceptable in this day and age of sophisticated computer gameplay. To be honest, though GRAW2 on the Xbox 360 isn’t perfect, their enemy AI is a lot better than the PC version! I know. I just played 4 hours of it before writing this. Because of the AI, I actually prefer my Xbox 360 console version over my PC version of GRAW2.

In my opinion, the stupid AI — both friend and foe in GRAW2 for the PC — is the reason I don’t care to play it as often as my Xbox 360 version. And that’s one of the many reasons why it will never be a classic game like the original Ghost Recon. Now I’m not saying the original GR didn’t have AI problems. It did — but not this bad.
