RBR, and its total makeover mod RSRBR, continue to set the standard for challenging physics and adrenaline-pumping thrills. Rally racing on unimproved gravel roads is rough and tumble compared to racing on a smoothly prepared tarmac. Expect a lot more response from the PWTS’ feedback motors with this style of racing. I keep my rally racing settings in the S_5 setting slot on my PWTS wheel.

SEn: 360. Although the PC drivers from Fanatec are the preferred way to set the wheel rotation angle, I discovered that for some reason RBR doubles the Fanatec driver’s wheel rotation setting. So if you set 280 degrees into the Fanatec driver, RBR "thinks" you want 280 degrees of rotation in each direction, for a total of 560 degrees. This may be due to RBR’s roots as an Xbox console title. Whatever the cause, a setting of 360 works just fine. Using 210 degrees makes the wheel far too twitchy for rally racing, and higher numbers make the wheel too numb.

FF: 33%. Higher settings can really jerk the wheel around in your hands, making precise driving difficult. In the game’s controller settings, I set my Force Feedback Strength to Full.

Sho: 33%. There’s no shortage of feedback cues in RBR, so less is more with this setting.

dri: OFF. This works best for me to compensate for the naturally drifty nature of rally cars.

AbS: 75%.

In-game Settings

I haven’t really done a lot of tweaking in RBR, aside from using the tips provided in Chipwich’s excellent RBR Guide in SimHQ’s Motorsports Forums. The biggest things are to set Force Feedback to "Full" in the Options GUI, set 792 degrees in the car’s setup options (allows you to mange steering ratio between the car setup and your wheel’s setup), and to go into the RBR file folder, find the RichardBurnsRally.ini file and delete the first line, which says "ConstantForceMultiplier = 60". That’s about it, although there’s plenty more things to tinker with in Chipwich’s excellent guide. Here are screen grabs of my settings for RSRBR.
