Heh heh heh. I remember Jetfighter 2.... When you started a career, you couldn't go on missions until you finished carrier quals. 2 day and 2 night carrier traps. Strange that 16 crashes (4 crashes would pass 1 trap attempt!) qualified you to take the bird into combat tho. In the original Jetfighter, I managed to get pretty good at a gear-up touch and go. In 2 I refined that to an inverted T&G.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but oh well.
I was about 4, it was '97. My family had an old 36mhz 486 that had DOS and Windows 3.1 on it. One day I was with my parents shopping at Meijers, and saw a game with an airplane on the front, and it was called "Falcon 3.0". They bought it, I installed it, and attempted to play it. I still don't know how I played it to this day. I didn't really pick up on flight sims then, no. I did not really start to like flight sims till about 2003, when the Kentucky State Fair had a little booth with X-Plane 7 on it. Shortly after playing that (for 5 minutes, people were in line), I realized that was extremely fun. A few days later, I got a Best Buy gift card from Alienware (Was supposed to get it with computer, so it arrived several months later, after complaining.), and went to the nearest Best Buy. There I bought MSFS 2002. I went home, and played that sucker for hours. Then after that I got X-Plane 7+8, MSFS 2004, until 2005, when I saw a game in the used games bin at a local EB titled "Jane's Air Superiority Collection". It was 5 bucks, and a flight sim COLLECTION, so I bought it. I had no idea what I was in for, I'll just say that much. Shortly after that, I got Falcon 4 at the same place for $2. No manual. I still look in that "used games" bin every time I am at that EB Games, and I look for any flight sims (or other good games for that matter).
To sum it all up, X-Plane 7 and USAF.

I guess MS FS1.0 and its WW1 dogfighting module was the first I used. Going to WW2 dogfighting sims is where I went before I switched over to EF2000 and Flanker and Falcon3. Am I like the only guy here that did the WarBirds thing? Anyone remember FIGHTER DUEL? Was my first PC multiplayer game (via modem) that I did dogfighting with. See below: System Requirements: Intel 486 DX/33 Mhz, MS-DOS 6.0+, 8 Mb RAM, 2 Mb HD free space, 256 color 640x480 VESA SVGA, 2X CD-ROM and Mouse. How about Falcon3 with the IHHD, or EF2K and LB2 via KALI? (Surfdog, Dewdog, Zuki, and others.) Wonder what would have happned with those thousands of hours spent on flight simming had I not gotten hooked by my first sim on an IBM-XT? Moot point now, but thats alot of time and money that coulda gone else where.

nope, me too. But since I am in europe, I had awful lags on my account back 199X with extreme warping. But I kept trying. Michael.

If I had to pick one, the first for me was the Atari Red Baron arcade game. That was the first time I was introduced to the idea that the technology was available to allow the average person to fly a plane on a computer simulator. If we're talking something you play on a personal computer, then, I guess maybe it would be Star Raiders on the Atari 800, although it's not an actual flight sim. My first real home flight sim was the SubLogic Flight Simulator II, on same Atari 800. My first combat sim (not counting the WWI part of Flight Simulator) was F-15 Strike Eagle from Microprose, of which I actually still have the manual:

To add my manual: Had very good info in it with detailed diagrams and cutaways on almost everything. A very nice manual, albeit short compared to recent ones. Michael.

Hi, My very first flight sim was Apache on the ZX Spectrum. I had another flight sim too (I forget what it was called now ) that I got not long after that was more akin to a FS2.0. It only used 7 colors: Brown (the land), Blue (the sea/water), Cyan (the sky), Gray (the runway) Black (the flight deck), white (the letters in the flight deck and the lines on the runway) and Yellow (the sun). It used a monotone clicking sound for the engine RPM that clicked faster with higher RPM! I never did find the RW again after taking off. After that, I was on to FS5.0 (yeah - I'd missed the fun with the earlier versions ) on a 386, then ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) on the 386. ATF didn't like my **VESA** graphics card on my 486, and so I left it on the shelf!!!!! (OMG!!) Next was FA-18 Interceptor on the Amiga 1200. I actually bought a joystick for this (it had 4 axis, and each was either on or off, not variable (?) as it was/is on PCs). It had a whole 2Mb RAM. A "recent" (1993-ish) TV series used 12 of these all connected together to render the external scenes of the space craft/space station, but I forget which programme it was! The original Falcon 4.0 was my first real flight sim on a "modern" PC, followed shortly after by FS2k, then Fs2k2, FS2k4... and now F4:AF. --TangoShadow

F-15 Strike Eagle and Ace of Aces on the Commodore 64 got me started, after getting a PC it was Aces over Europe and Janes ATF & AH64 Longbow that got me back into sims.

Mine was the first Sim published by Microprose, can't even think of the name. My plane didn't have much-of a shape, looked like a horizontal cursor symbol. Maybe someone can remember the name of that sim.

Started simming around 1990. (Good lord, 16 years already!) There was a Mosquito sim for C-64 and Activisions F-14 Top Gun (C-64), absolutely cool with the training and career progress. Gunship, F-16 Combat Pilot and Fighter Bomber, pretty cool for back then. On PC, Battle of Britain, F-19. A few years later Fleet Defender (!!!!), DiD's Tornado, the Falcons (that actually flew overhead patterns), Aces over Europe and then all that Janes came up with.
Too often do we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.
