I remember now. A year or two back we saw reports of a competition in Hong Kong I think People from all over the world in an Il-2 dogfight competition... The guy or girl who won it had full flaps down in the roundabout of death until his opponent fell off the perch The RoF developers may have this mindset Those of us who fly combat sims in role-play historical mode find this competitive stuff beneath us. I do anyway, it's AirQuake no offence But look how it's panning out. Neoqb are providing an arena for those guys with Battlefield1942-style online stats Our historical penchant doesn't need to suffer at all, we'll just fly the planes properly <foxhole> But our priorities are quite different perhaps.Ming

Flaps? Whazzat? Some sort of fancy wing on the wing?
We're all just coming to grips with these new fangled ailerons that replaced tried and tested warp wing techniques.
Next you'll be wanting something really crazy, like having the wheels retract into the fuselage.
The problem with innovation is that it rebukes the status quo of the market, and rather than shaping the product to the market one attempts to mold the market to the product.
Sometimes it works - see iPod and iTunes.
Sometimes it doesn't - see Edsel and Pacer.
It all comes down to the quality and uniqueness of the product. If RoF is as good as we hope it will be, all will be forgiven and we will embrace and reward them in the best possible way (money).
I suppose I've always thought RoF would be primarily an online sim with a robust single player option rather than a flight sim with two modes of play. It was just the vibe I got reading the developer blog and comments here.
[edit] Yep, they fixed the "bat turn" insta-trim in IL-2.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

Well I'm with Ming. I was hoping for a historical sim with historical missions and historical pilots and squadrons from other countries. Not "AirQuake". I have zero interest in that. Have to wait and see now, I guess. +1 And I suspect a lot of others.

The stats could be used for more than kills and targets. There could be an unofficial competition to see who can get a pilot to last through the great war. A Dead is Dead server where if you die you have to start a new pilot would see some interesting flying. I bet that Spad XIII would be a popular choice.

Dead is Dead stats tracking would in fact be the only cool singleplayer thing I can see with online stats. ...and that is enough to convince me it is worth the agro. Imagine if there could be a virtual "London Gazette" with articles on the most succesful Aces in a campaign. One of the features I hope is being planned is a feed to a http site where one could view ones success while supping a morning brew at work.
