Thanks, Hank. That is a powerful movie: considering when others are out partying & carousing, they are having thier intestines ripped to shreds by bullets -- sometimes on orders. And I know how memorable the scene is when the veteran with hookhands thrusts them through a window in closeup. but I'm looking for actiondramas more along the lines of the ones on the list

A couple more recommendations,
Battle of Britain Soldier of Orange
And IMHO, you should stay away from these stinkers,
Pearl Harbor U-571 I still laugh at the comment made by my friend as we walked to the car after seeing U-571. "That was the best WW2 movie I ever saw." I was dumbfounded. I doubt he's ever seen Das Boot. If you can find it, there's a movie called Black Rain. (Not the Michael Douglas thriller) It's a Japanese movie based on events just after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I had to have the rental house special order it, but it was worth seeing.

"Day After Tomorrow" (1983) for Cold War Nuclear Holocaust Goodness.
"Valkyrie" -Like it, despite the cast. "Come and See" -- Russian Film I think "Sahara" - w/Bogart "Defiance" -not bad for a newer film "Midway" - Classic "Inglorious Bastards" -Original "Saints and Soldiers" - Good "Miracle at St. Anna" -eh..ok "To Hell and Back - Audy Murphy (sp?)" "Bridge over the River Kwai" -Despite it's innaccuracies still a classic. "Empire of the Sun" -Spielberg Classic in my book.. (see if you can find ben stiller) "The Great Raid" - recent, and pretty good..if you read the book..even better "Enemy at the Gates" - meh..but satisfies the itch. "The Winter War" - Finnish Film about Russo-Fin war.. "To End All Wars" - Jack Bauer at his best..j/k Keifer Sutherland. "The Longest Day" - If not already mentioned...

I can't believe the movie is 11 years old. Wheels Time sure does fly doesn't it? I cant believe it's now been almost 8 years since 9/11.

Memphis Belle isn't as bad as some people make out. Good cast too. If you fancy Das Boot, get the uncut miniseries with subtitles, not the terrible dubbed and heavily cut movie version. Raiders of the Lost Ark. It has God, Nazis, Gestapo, subs. It's a war film Kelly's Heroes Midway (not nearly as good as Tora, but still watchable) The Young Lions (Marlon Brando, Monty Clift, Dean Martin...) Here's a curveball - Ptain - about the political intrigues that lead to the French surrender and Vichy government. It's an interesting counterbalance to some of the more action-oriented stuff - almost like a French Downfall.

is memphis Belle the one with a group of black afro descendent americans pilots of p51 ? i saw one movies very good, but i dont know its name, i bought a memphis belles but it was a documentary camouflage as movie in the cover You're thinking of The Tuskeegee Airmen. Although there was also a (semi factual) Memphis Belle movie released around the same time, IIRC. I think they were HBO productions.

Two of my favorites
The Aviator with Leonardo DiCaprio and the Carpetbaggers with George Peppard.
The story of Howard Hughes.
Lots of aviation stuff.
There's nothing worse than going through life unhappy about various things.

I've got a lot of obscure or foreign language WWII stuff, I'd certainly recommend Talvisota which has been mentioned a couple of times already, real in your face grit and realism made 9 years before SPR and if Speilberg had told me he had'nt seen it I'd say he was lying. plenty of youtube clips on this if you look them up. El-Alamein in the line of fire, Italian move mostly about simple survival in retreat, beautiful little movie, a real gem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6X4geGcc90Zvezda, Russian movie about a recon platoon who actually behave realistically and avoid contact, lot of tension, worth a look if you are interested in Eastern front, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr538OuRruk

I really like this film. It's definitely unique and a bit surreal.
