Hello everybody, I've been lurking here for a while, but finally decided to sign up. I love RoF, I will admit it does have problems, but I love it because of everything it does right. There are other things that need fixed first, but I believe this would be a rather simple fix. I think there needs to be an option to turn off the external views. If you are running a full realism server, it would add a lot to leveling the playing field. As you know the Spad has many advantages over the other planes, but your visibility sucks in it. I'm not just whining because I've been shot down by a bunch of Spads either. What do you guys think?

I'd settle for a real dogfight server.

Yes and no.
There should be an option, for serious online playing, for some kind of external views, but without offering enough informations for taking tactical decisions in dogfights. For instance, no fly-by allowed, no pursuit view, but just a scripted view showing one's own aircraft like if you were seeing it from another close plane in patrol.
Because with such beautiful aircrafts and beautiful landscapes, it would just be a total waste to be only stuck in the cockpit (please, dont' tell me to fly offline to look at the aircrafts and the landscapes, I've ZERO interest for offline flying).
The possibility to see other friendly aircrafts in externals (not the enemy aircrafts of course), WHILE STAYING IN THE GROUND, would be also a good option.

Maybe a single option to enable full simulation mode? Checking it would disable all arcade features. It could automatically turn off every aid with one click. Map, padlock, external views, auto engine controls, unlimited ammo, hud gauges, incons, etc. could all be disabled at once and make for quick and easy full real simulation setup.

Turning em off is all fine and dandy but can we have em back on when we die, so as to alleviate the boredom. Not that I die a lot, but you know...just in case

Wouldn't that allow dead guys to return like 'Pete Sandidge'? That wouldn't be good for those still fighting Pete's buddies.

Yes, but an even better option would be "allow views on friendly aircrafts" only.
This way, no information on the position of the enemy planes.
Yeah, that wouldn't be bad. Ole Pete couldn't be a guardian angel. He would simply be a harmless ghost. I wouldn't really want respawn. Okay if an option, but if it is a either there or it isn't, I would vote for it to not be there. Allow players to join the next round, but not respawn into a currect one. Besides, knowing that one wouldn't be respawning will probably make a better pilot out of them. Doubtful they would be doing silly things trying to get kills, if they knew they can't respawn. It would help discipline and allow full real servers to be as real as possible. No, I don't like respawns.

I like the persistent idea, but a lot of bugs need worked out first, servers crash way too often for it to work right now.
I will have to try the "allow spectator" setting, I've seen it, but didn't know what it was.
Edit ------------
I tried the "spectator mode". I can't tell a difference with it on or off. The manual says it allows you to view other planes after you crash, but I can do that with it on or off.
So we still need an option that is with the other difficulty options, to turn off external views. Maybe these options, "No externals", "Friendly only", "No Limit"
The only advantage planes like the Albatross have is taken away with the use of external views.
And for god's sake, don't add a "no cockpit" view. I always hated that in IL2. I know you didn't have to use it, but if others were, and you weren't then you were at a disadvantage. If it is added, it for sure needs to be an option, I don't know why anyone would like that view, but whatever...

Yeah, that wouldn't be bad. Ole Pete couldn't be a guardian angel. He would simply be a harmless ghost. Unfortunately, with most any spectator view, Ole Pete's ghost would still be riding shotgun, making sure you know when someone's approaching 6.
