I stopped playing all my computer games in 2004/2005 as I had to concentrate on my career and other things. I would check the forums occasionally to see how SOW was doing.
A month back I started reading my old WWII pilots' biographies and got the bug bad. I downloaded 1946 from Ubi and play a little every night now.
Only problem is I no longer have a gaming rig. I still have my Controllers and TrackIR but use a laptop coupled to a monitor. I really want to get a new rig together but it would be unwise to do it before SOW comes out. I really hope it's released this year.

I would hazard a guess it will take a year or so for anything but bleeding edge desktops to play SOW in all it's glory at decent frame rates.
Just think of the past releases from Oleg and others. Oblivion, Crysis etc.

Let me give you an example. The original Il2 was released in 2001. I didn't start playing the series until 2007 when I had an affordable rig that was powerful enough to run it decently to my preferences. the original il2 was perfectly playable at high grafix settings with decent frame rates on a less then bleeding edge pc at the time of release. with subsequent updates, FB , PF and then 1946 the gfx engine and landscape detail were each time significantly increased by oleg's team (so requiring a better pc to run equally well frame rates). "perfect" mode for ex wasnt even introduced till FB, it didnt exist before then. at original il2 release i think i was running a geoforce-2 card on a duron 600 cpu with maybe a gig of ram and was getting fluid gameplay with high gfx settings in opengl, you'd obviously have no hope of doing that with the current 1946 if you can delay upgrading a few more months, wait till release time to know the exact specs
Be advised, we got zips in the wire

I would wait six months after the game was released to change my system, and buy something very very good for BoB without the need to expend too much money.

Selective memory, perhaps? On a similarly specced PIII 550 Geforce 2 MX and 256 MB, anything above low settings was a slideshow at best. More than two a/c onscreen turned it into a slideshow. Missions were guaranteed slideshows. The first computer that ran IL-2 Ace nicely for me (especially online) was a 1.8 GHz Athlon and Geforce 5900XT with 1GB of RAM ca. 2004. And even that lasted only for so long... Besides, if you could afford 1GB in 2001 and find a suitable board you must have been either rich or lucky or both

I think we will see SOW in late 2010, early 2011, with features not making the first release being added in late 2011.

I think SoW will be released when the team want to release it. I sometimes think they laugh at the discussions regarding release-dates, and it's just Oleg's sense of humour to put out release dates for people to split hairs over. But put it this way; a year or more ago we didn't have updates as regular as this, and so then we were thinking SoW was a myth. At least now it's tangible; we just need to be patient.
