Nobody. Oleg told that it is too early currently.

I don't even Oleg knows exactly what the specifications will be. They are still in the development phase and usually when you have software in this state there is a lot of "junk" and debugging code stuck in there that slows things down considerably.

There's some obvious ones like having a good DirectX9 video card at minimum but the exact specs I suspect we'll only know close to release. StarCraft II, which has been in beta for months and being actively used by thousands of external beta testers (I was lucky enough to get in) only just released official system specs last week. The game comes out on July 27th. So that's the kind of timing you'll likely have to expect here as well.

I stopped playing all my computer games in 2004/2005 as I had to concentrate on my career and other things. I would check the forums occasionally to see how SOW was doing.

A month back I started reading my old WWII pilots' biographies and got the bug bad. I downloaded 1946 from Ubi and play a little every night now.

Only problem is I no longer have a gaming rig. I still have my Controllers and TrackIR but use a laptop coupled to a monitor. I really want to get a new rig together but it would be unwise to do it before SOW comes out. I really hope it's released this year.

I would hazard a guess it will take a year or so for anything but bleeding edge desktops to play SOW in all it's glory at decent frame rates.

Just think of the past releases from Oleg and others. Oblivion, Crysis etc.

What ever the game needs, it just makes more sense to buy a system when you know the specs. That way you know the budget you have at that moment and as prices have dropped over time, get a higher spec system.

Let me give you an example. The original Il2 was released in 2001. I didn't start playing the series until 2007 when I had an affordable rig that was powerful enough to run it decently to my preferences.

It depends on how badly you want to spend money on a Cadillac. smile

the original il2 was perfectly playable at high grafix settings with decent frame rates on a less then bleeding edge pc at the time of release. with subsequent updates, FB , PF and then 1946 the gfx engine and landscape detail were each time significantly increased by oleg's team (so requiring a better pc to run equally well frame rates). "perfect" mode for ex wasnt even introduced till FB, it didnt exist before then.

at original il2 release i think i was running a geoforce-2 card on a duron 600 cpu with maybe a gig of ram and was getting fluid gameplay with high gfx settings in opengl, you'd obviously have no hope of doing that with the current 1946

if you can delay upgrading a few more months, wait till release time to know the exact specs

Be advised, we got zips in the wire

I would wait six months after the game was released to change my system, and buy something very very good for BoB without the need to expend too much money.

Selective memory, perhaps? biggrin
On a similarly specced PIII 550 Geforce 2 MX and 256 MB, anything above low settings was a slideshow at best. More than two a/c onscreen turned it into a slideshow. Missions were guaranteed slideshows.

The first computer that ran IL-2 Ace nicely for me (especially online) was a 1.8 GHz Athlon and Geforce 5900XT with 1GB of RAM ca. 2004. And even that lasted only for so long...

Besides, if you could afford 1GB in 2001 and find a suitable board you must have been either rich or lucky or both smile

I was wondering whether I was imagining things...

I run IL2 '46 on the second to highest video setting. There are occasional stutters depending on the number of objects in the vicinity.

My system is about three years old (2.1 ghz duel core 1 Gb ram and 256 mb Radeon) and I have trouble with the southbridge heating to 74c (That's where my video card sits) during game play. Not enough to crash, however, there is concern.

Even with a modest upgrade with more RAM and a new graphics card, I can't see being able to run SOW anywhere to my satisfaction if these pictures are any indication of the level of detail.

When I first picked up IL2 I had a socket A 1gig athlon, 256 ram and a voodoo5500, straight from Red Baron days. I had to upgrade straight away so I got 1.8 athlon, 512 of ram and a GF2. I had to run it at 16bit with medium settings to keep the average frame rate above 30, that also meant avoiding flying over trees and definitely stay away from cities. It wasn't until I upgraded to a 2.4 thoroughbred Athlon core with a Radeon 9700pro and a gig of ram that it started to come into it's own for me. I still remember the shop owner thinking I was mad getting a gig of ram. "Whatever are you running that needs all that ram" he said!

However with the right programming we might not have the same experience with SoW. Rise of flight is a hi fidelity sim and my current PC runs that fine. I'm hoping that it will at least give me a reasonable experience in SoW to. I obviously will need to upgrade to get the best out of it. But it should be playable. Since Il2 was first thought of Intel and NVidia have worked closely with game developers to help get the most out of their code. I have high hopes for SoW in this respect.

Edit: Do you remember you could dial the 3d right down in the first release of IL2.

I'm afraid I don't remember the dialing down part. I never had the original for reasons stated above. But that would be a feature in SOW that might appeal to a wider audience if I understand your drift correctly.

Specifically in '01 I was running a 1 ghz Athlon with 32 mb ATI Rage and 128 MB ram. Don't think we would have had very much fun with that. Plus, I was busy with other titles at the time. Later on in '04, I upgraded to 256 MB ram with 128 mb higher end Radeon. Even with that, I still didn't feel it would have been up to snuff with FB or PF.

smile I played IL2 late 2001 on a 1GHz TBird, 512MB DDR and an Elsa Gladiac 'something' on an ECS K7S5A with that cool SIS735 chipset. Eventually upgraded to an Athlon XP3200+ in a Shuttle SN45 and the infamous FX5900.

Current system is a C2D E6400@3.2 with 4GB on an EVGA 680 board and recently went from an 8800GT to the 5870 Batmobile by Gigabyte.

I built my current system in the spring of 2007. At that time, Oleg was publicly advising anyone considering an upgrade or new build to wait until SOW:BOB specs were announced. Suffice to say, I'm glad I didn't take his advice.

That system runs IL2 just great on max settings, and after an upgrade to the GPU it runs ROF pretty well on slightly reduced settings. (FWIW it's based around an E6600 @ 3.0ghz and a 260GTX, upgraded from a 8800GTS).

IL2 and ROF are the only games I'm into for now, so I'm in a position to wait for SOW before doing any more upgrades. But if I were in a different situation and thinking that I wanted to upgrade soon for some reason in addition to the prospect of SOW... I'd be tempted to go ahead and do it. SOW pretty clearly isn't going to be released in the next couple of months. My money is on BOB day 2011.

Im with you on that, I think that a late 2011 release is more realistic.

I think SoW will be released when the team want to release it. I sometimes think they laugh at the discussions regarding release-dates, and it's just Oleg's sense of humour to put out release dates for people to split hairs over. biggrin
But put it this way; a year or more ago we didn't have updates as regular as this, and so then we were thinking SoW was a myth. At least now it's tangible; we just need to be patient.

Here we go again Phillip..

And this is little off topic for this thread.. it just continues to simmer and permeate just short of the boiling point.

The release date syndrome will be with us until we die.. to our children's children.
