I'm trying to increase the map size in-game so I can see more details, like where my airfield is. Is this possible?

If you right click and move your mouse over the map, you can use the mousewheel to scroll in.

If you double click on the displayed map, it expands to occupy a good chunk of the screen ( can be good to have level flight autopilot engaged for this )

I've got the map to come up by double clicking on it, but I'm finding no way to get it back to its normal size again.. any ideas chaps?

Yes, my logical response to get the map to return to its normal size was to double click it again, but that doesn't work, the map has been stuck in full size for days now..

Its possible to resize the map. Left click and hold on the Mapborder and position the map more into the middle of your screen.
Then resize with click&hold on the right down corner.

Damn I can't explain things in english!

edit.. that worked thanks mate.
At the bottom right of the map there is a small darker grey triangle, (very small and easy to overlook).
By clicking and holding it is easy to adjust the size of the map!
I was double clicking on the map to return it to its normal size, but for some reason it had retained the large size and I wasn't aware of the small tab at the right lower corner.. Take a free beer from me paf!

Double clicking expands to nearly full screen and then double clicking again sends the map back to a square in the bottom right of the screen here. That's using XP though.

No mate, this problem I had with xp.. I've since changed to win7 and it was still there.
The map, for whatever reason, once double clicked would stay at maximum size.
Now I know where the 'resize' tab is, I've managed to get it to return to a smaller size.
Don't ask me why it did it in the first place.. lol! but it's resolved now
