Search and rescue for at least 6 ongoing after Baltimore bridge collapse

Quote
The crew of the cargo ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore lost power and issued a mayday in the moments before the disaster, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

The container ship Dali sent the mayday in time for authorities to stop traffic from entering the bridge, limiting the number of vehicles involved in what officials have called a "mass casualty event."

"We're thankful that between the mayday and the collapse that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not on the bridge," Moore said.

Authorities said a crew of eight construction workers were on the bridge, in addition to any traffic at the time of the collapse.

Search and rescue operations pulled two workers from the water, one in critical condition who was hospitalized. Efforts to locate the other six are ongoing.

Authorities said that sonar had detected cars in the water, which is about 50 feet deep. The temperature was about 47 degrees Fahrenheit before dawn on Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Moore said an investigation is ongoing to determine how many people were caught in the collapse and plunged into the river.

"But the thing we do know is that many of the vehicles were stopped before they got onto the bridge, which saved lives in a very, very heroic way."

At least they were able to stop traffic. When I heard a bridge in Baltimore went down I was expecting far worse.
I feel bad for those construction workers and their families.

Seemed way easier than knocking out that bridge in "Force 10 from Navarone".

That might not be correct. I’ve seen a pretty specific article listing 5. But that could be wrong too. Most early information is usually wrong info.

Whether it's 5 or 20, I hope they are found and rescued. But I doubt anyone can survive being in a car in deep water for more than a few minutes. No way to die. Only way to die is of old age peacefully and painlessly in your sleep.

The news also mention couple dozen road construction crew on the bridge. Just sad and tragic!

And yet again the US news media demonstrates their propensity for sensationalism by calling this tragedy a "mass casualty event". No, a mass casualty event is something like the earthquake that hit Turkey a few months ago where at least a couple thousand people lost their lives.

I'm pretty sure the declaration of a mass casualty event came from government emergency management authorities. It is a term used in the standardized incident response system employed by numerous entities in the U.S., and possibly other countries as well. The system is designed to scale up as needed when more resources are required and lays out the command structure / responsibilities.
