DBS2 mode After making our own hole to drive through, I order my flight to rejoin and pull up my A2G mode. With the radar slaved to the strike waypoint I punch the buttons a couple of times to give me the DBS2 mode (Doppler Beam Sharpening) giving me a good picture of the highway airfield on the left MFD. The fence surrounding the field stands out clearly.
I quickly slew the radar cursors over the center of the airfield I quickly slew the radar cursors over the center of the airfield, designate the spot and order my flight to attack my target.I don’t really care what they hit, I’ll just be happy to get them over the field and dropping their bombs. I make sure my bombs are ready and switch from computer assisted bombing (CCRP) to manual bombing (CCIP).
I see a flight of MiG-23s on the RWR scope I’m very close to the target now but storm clouds are looming on the horizon.I see a flight of MiG-23s on the RWR scope and query AWACS who tells me they are 30 miles out. I know my “play time” over the target will be very brief.
I’m exactly 90 degrees to the runway Coming up on the target I’m not in an ideal position to make a Durandal pass since I’m exactly 90 degrees to the runway. Offsetting slightly to the north I plan to execute a hard right turn to line-up on the runway.
I pop-the speed brakes and reef the jet around into a tight right turn Reaching the imaginary point in the sky where I think the extended runway centerline crosses I pop-the speed brakes and reef the jet around into a tight right turn while the airframe groans in protest.
I press and hold the pickle button as the bombs come off at the preset interval After the line-up turn I only have a brief second to make a small correction before the runway is flashing by beneath me. I press and hold the pickle button as the bombs come off at the preset interval.
Finishing the pass down the runway I plug in the afterburner Finishing the pass down the runway I plug in the afterburner and zoom climb up into a half Cuban-8 to align myself for my iron bomb pass on the control tower and radio tower.
At the top of the loop I look up through the canopy At the top of the loop I look up through the canopy, spy the airfield and continue to pull down until I’m in a position to roll upright. As I do this I switch to my Mk-84s and set them both to come off the racks together.
I mash the pickle button one more time
