Falcon 4.0: Allied Force – Part 2 Page 12

Another interesting feature (are you getting the picture, there is a ton of cool stuff in F4:AF) is the ability to “on the fly” put in a target request which will immediately insert a mission into the ATO. This can be particularly useful if you spot an airfield that is generating damaging sorties and you want to take it out as quickly as possible. As a test case I picked the low priority Tivat airfield to create a strike on.

My main problem lay in finding a unit that was capable of accepting the mission. With many of my primary bases cratered or severely depleted due to attrition I had to go all the way to Padova in the very north of Italy and task a flight of Eurofighter Typhoons with the job. Ideally I would have liked to have sent Tornados, but they were so decimated on the first morning that they have yet to recover.

Once you’ve found a capable unit, just right click on the target you wish to add to the ATO and select “ADD PACKAGE”. From there you can select the unit you wish to fly the mission, the take-off time, and the time on target. For obvious reasons you have to give enough time to get the unit ready and enough time to meet the TOT. The flight time would directly affect the ability to make the TOT. If you set unrealistic parameters the system will advise you of that and you can make changes.

Once the mission is accepted the ATO is updated immediately and when the mission time rolls around it runs it. If it happens to be an F-16 mission, you can hop in it and fly it as well! In this case, since it is a flight of Typhoons, we will have to be content to follow along on the AWACS/map screen. I track the pair of Typhoons on their long flight into the target area. Just as they approach the target however, two different flights of enemy fighters bounce them. I saw this time and again with enemy fighters actively seeking out intruders and breaking off from their patrol areas to aggressively terminate them. Unfortunately for my Typhoon units, the enemy outnumbers them 6-to-2, and the fight is over within minutes.
